Weekend Wear: 2010 or 2003?

Yesterday I finally felt well enough to leave the house for a bit.  I met up with a stylish academic friend for a coffee and then went for a bridal gown fitting.  I decided to wear this dress that I bought on a crazy whim a couple of months ago.  It was perhaps a foolish purchase because it is way too short for my comfort zone.  I definitely would not wear it for teaching.  The last time I wore, I layered it under another dress.  Yesterday I wore it over jeans.1

1. Plaid dress - KensieGirl (Filene's Basement and remixed)
Skinny Jeans - Old Navy (remixed)
Shirt - H&M (remixed)
Boots - John Fluevog (remixed)
Earrings - Gift

I only sort of got into this trend back when it was more popular circa 2003/2004.  I am 99.9% sure that I wouldn't wear a dress over jeans to teach in just as I wouldn't wear shorts over tights in the classroom.  (I don't wear jeans that often for teaching anyway.)  What do you think about wearing dresses and skirts over jeans?  Is it a look best left in 2003?  Kilt-wearers, I'm also curious if you do or would consider wear a kilt over jeans or "meggings" or "mantyhose"...?

On another note, since I'm on antibiotics and not quite 100% yet, M. and I spent a quiet New Year's Eve playing Scrabble and watching a movie.  I did miss my usual ritual of getting all dressed up and going out on the town with friends, but it was kind of nice to not have to go out in the cold.  What did you do to ring in the new year?
