Chess anyone???

Is it me or do you feel like you are watching a chess match when it comes to the presidential election? Mc Cain has been all over Obama for his lack of experience then he chooses someone who has just as little as Obama. I am sure there will be a counter move coming from Obama's camp in the coming days. I really can't wait for Nov to get here so I can get back to my mindless TV that relaxes me so in the evenings, instead of the chess match that is the presidential election. Some call checkmate already!!!!!

Have a great long week, I plan to put the finishing touches on back to school stuff and get ready for the big day on Tuesday, still hard to fathom that I have a 1st grader, mom wasn't kidding when she said this time would go by in the blink of an eye!

So what are you up to this weekend?

A conversation with my son....

Jackson: Mommy, I want a bagel naked!

Me: What!

Jackson; you know a bagel with nothing on it

Me: oh ok where did you learn the phrase naked bagel

Jackson: I haven't

Me: you didn't here someone say O want a bagel naked?

Jackson: No, but if you have a bagel and you don't put anything on it then it is naked right?

Me: yes, you are right. I say scratching my head wondering what I am going to do with this boy when he is 8 if already has this line of reasoning at 4!

Bring on September

So last week while I was watching the wee bit of TV that I do I saw the promos for the upcoming season of Biggest Loser families and Lipstick Jungle. I love these shows!!!! I usually tivo them and watch in the morning while I am doing my workout or runs on the treadmill because there is no time when those shows are actually on for me to watch.

For some reason the idea of new shows got me all excited. Something to look forward to, then I thought Wow !!! I need to get some excitement in my life if new shows in September are what I am looking forward. Am I alone or are there others out that also get all hyped up for the new season of shows??? What are the shows you can't wait for in September?

Back to school

I am a planner by nature anyone close to me will tell you that I plan everything down to the littlest detail. So when I read some blogs that were bragging about the new school supply website, I thought I have to go check that out because it might save me a couple of hours going from store to store to buy the school supplies on our 1st grade supply list.

So I checked out Exschoolsupplies.com I was able to get everything on my list with the exception of the disinfectant wipes that were on the list. (still trying to figure that one out btw) So I added everything to my cart and within a week all of Lauren's supplies were here and I was able to pack her back pack for the first day with all of her supplies. Now I am still a novice when it comes to this school supply list gig since my daughter is only in 1st grade but I must say this was easy fast and really kind of fun.

Also they have a program that allows 10% of your purchase price to be donated to the school of your choice. Since I am the BoxTop coordinator at our school I am very interested in ways to earn money for our school and this just seemed to be so easy, I plan to bring the idea to our PTA president at our first meeting.

So I encourage you to go check them out, I don't think you will be disappointed. Now if only back to school clothes shopping was that easy!

** I was not paid for this post!

To My Little Man Jackson!

It was 4 years ago on the 23rd of August that you decided to come into this world, well you decided but so did I since I scheduled to be induced but was already having contractions when we arrived as the hospital so I guess it was a bit of a joint effort.

When I first found out I was having a boy I was a bit worried, I had never been around boys, who was going to teach me how to take care of a boy? Luckily it all came naturally and you have been a joy to watch grow.

From the start I called you my little man but that was not true at all you were quite the big man tipping the scales at a whopping 10lbs 2 oz and 22 inches long ! When they wheeled me by the nursery on my way to my room they asked if I knew which one was you and I said "of course the 3 months old in the center there!" You will always be my little man, my silly man and goofy man who likes to talk and explore. Happy 4th birthday little man!

Our Vacation

Well let me first give you a little history! We have gone to the beach 2 other times with families once to the Outer Banks and then last year to LBI. This by far was the best of them all. Outer Banks I now realize had a lot of tension between families never a good thing on a vacation. Last year we got rained out, it rained from Saturday night when we got there to Wednesday morning when we left because we couldn't take it anymore.

This year it rained only the night we arrive monsoon rains, I thought to myself oh no here we go again. We woke up Sunday morning to the sun beaming in our window. Could it be that the curse was broken? Yes it was and we had 6 glorious days!

We shared a house with 2 other families, in total there were 6 adults and 5 kids which consisted of 3 16 year olds and my 6 and 4 year old. Quite the age range. The teens of course were on the late to bed late to rise program and my kids were on the late to bed early to rise program. It really worked out ok.

As for our house it was one of those homes that grow on you, at first I was not impressed by what I saw but as the hours then days went on it grew on me. It was a house that was built in 1954 and had been renovated in 1974 with the needed improvement such as microwave, tv, etc. Why you are thinking do I care about how old the house was? Well at Long Beach Island (LBI) ocean front beach homes typically are million plus homes ridiculous sized homes! Some of them rent as high as 15K a week.Way out of our range even with 2 other families. So if you were out on the beach and looked at the houses down the beach all you saw were mc mansion after mc mansion. I came to love our little house, it felt inviting warm and most of all comfortable. Ok with the exception of the bed we had which had mattress with two huge dips in it where it looked like two elephants had slept for 15 years! Other then that it was a quaint house and I loved it!

This isn't a great picture but at the very top it shows our house next to the big one on the other side, then if you look down the coast line here are all the other houses.

Every morning we would get up get my kids some breakfast then head out to the beach for morning playtime. The best part of this is that our house was right on the beach! all we had to do was walk over the sand dune and bam there you were. It made going back and forth with fickle kids a breeze. That was pretty much our day back and forth to the beach finally coming home at 5 for cocktails, showers and dinner and yes in that order.

Each night we had a theme night for dinner One night was Polish night we made perogies and they were to die for think of dumplings only better. Then there was Italian night Seafood night yum my mouth is watering thinking about it. I put on 5 lbs because all I seemed to do was eat drink and sit on the beach. Ah the life.

I told Dan that since we live a fast paced double career life that we need to do this kind of vacation every 6 months. First it was inexpensive as far as family vacations for 4 are concerned and it was totally low stress just the right environment to relax regroup and recharge. He agreed so next year LBI here we come now I need to come up with a winter plan I am sure I will find something.

I took a ton of pictures some of which I have included in this post the others can be seen below. Enjoy!

Home

We are home and Dan is resting, the surgery took 2 hours but it looks as though everything went well. However I now have 2 sickies in the house since Lauren has a horrible case of swimmers ear. Ah tonight should be a blast between taking care of her and her dad!

Thanks for all the well wishes!

We are all a little stressed

Tomorrow the hubs is having sinus surgery all will be fine I have no doubt but there is a definite fear in the air of our house tonight. Dan went to bed at 7:30 it is 9:30 now and he is still sleeping and I am sure he will till morning. This is not normal for Dan as he is the night owl and I am the early to bed one off our family, yet here I sit a good 20 minutes past my bedtime.

So how do I combat my stress about tomorrow? I clean... yes clean. I went into our master closet and focused on my side and ended up straighting the entire top shelf on one side and we have a walk in closet! 2 trash bags of goodwill clothes later here I am reading blogs and typing my own. Gee no pent up stress here in this house!!

Surgery is at 12:30 and should be over by 2pm I will be sure to post an update till then I guess I have a lot more cleaning to do.

Not so Worldless Wednesday

Ok I will admit I was a bit hesitant to put this photo of me up but then I got to thinking, while I was running my 3 miles this morning. why not I don't look that bad for 36 and 2 kids. Plus if I drop the last 15 that I want to I will have a picture to compare it too! But I also included a cute picture of the princess from the beach so you won't focus on mine too long, pretty sure of herself isn't she?

File this under downright creepy!

Ok I read a lot of news on the Internet, it is how I konw what is going on in the world, who has time to comb through the paper everyday? Not Me! Every now and then I come across stories that I just can't be live and this morning was one of those times.

Check out this link: Corpse Kept Upright for 3-Day Wake

When I saw this title I thought surely you must be joking! Who in their right mind would have a corpse kept upright for a 3 day wake in their home? I remember a long time ago my mom telling me stories of having her dad laid out in the family house for his wake in 1954 and that freaked me out, but it was understandable because that is what they did in those days but this was down right creepy, go check out the link and the picture!

Mom always said I was special

For most of the summer I have had bees, huge bees lurking on my back deck. I saw a few trying to burrow their way into the wood of my kids play set, but we stopped them before they got to far into their nest making. Yet, still I had bees. Big Bees, Killer Bees, look!
These suckers were big!!! They didn't bother anyone so I let them be, no need in upsetting the circle of life right??? Until I stepped on one of those suckers and he stung me. I guess I would sting someone too, if I were stepped on. It hurt like no other bee sting I have ever had, that was it, the bees needed to go. Ecosystem or no ecosystem.

I told the hubby to get on it even if it meant calling in the pros, which I knew is what would happen because he is not Mr. Fixit. He did however identify the area the were coming from. Seems they had found a cozy place under my sons bedroom window. They were taking off and landing as if on an aircraft carrier. I stood in my sons room and put my ear close to the wall where they were on hte outside and you could hear the buzz of all those little critters, how did I miss this????

The pest guy came that day, looked up and asked if we had any dead ones around. Sure guy I keep them on ice for my kids upcoming science fair projects! No, I don't have any dead ones! However the bee gods must have been with me because we did eventually find a dead one in the corner of the deck. Pest guy pokes at it and proclaims you have European Hornets. Excuse me? Yes, European hornets, they should have stayed in Europe he says to me.

Great, I have special insects, international insects, lucky me. Mom always said I was special. How much to get rid of them I ask? $195. Great! Get to it I say. As I take out the check book and feel that same stinging sensation all over again.

This is what the nest looks like, getting rid of that was worth. every penny of the $195

Is it weird if it's normal?

Me again!

I have a tear-off calendar that gives helpful tips, or quotes, or little messages to ponder, etc each day. Recently, one of the pages had this quote on it: “Serve the dinner backward, do anything-but for goodness sake, do something weird.” ~Elsa Maxwell~

My VERY FIRST THOUGHT was of how we do Family Fun Night every Friday. FFN consists of the kids picking out a movie, bringing their little chairs up to the coffee table in the family room, and then we sit down as a family and eat our dinner in front of the movie. Generally, we will do popsicles, or popcorn, or something treat-like after the main meal. To us, this is part of our normal routine, but for other families, this would be something different, something odd, maybe even something…WEIRD??? I know, I know, eating in front of the TV, and letting little kids watch TV are on the list of the worst things we can supposedly do, but I honestly believe it’s bonded our family together. As a family, we look forward to the tradition of FFN, and it opens discussions of what movie to choose, and why, and opens discussions during and after the movie of what happened and what choices were good/bad (choices in character’s behaviors, or use of words, or their physical actions), etc. When the meal and treats have been consumed, we snuggle up together enjoy each other’s company for the rest of the movie. And even though we do it every single Friday, it’s still “weird” and not part of the NORMAL routine of the rest of the week. What do you guys do to change things up a bit around your own homes? It doesn’t necessarily have to be about a mealtime, but that’s just where my mind went upon reading that quote! I’d love to hear what other families do that might be a bit “weird”!!

Rebel without a cause

I want to start off with a quick thanks to Steph for being trusting enough to allow me (Leah from Laughing Leah Loves Lilies) to guest blog for her while she’s away. Hopefully I don’t scare off all her loyal viewers, and with any luck, maybe I’ll gain a few loyal viewers of my own in the process!

Now on with the show…

Was there anything from your childhood that you just couldn’t stand, and you swore when you were an adult and could make your own decisions, you’d do that particular thing VERY differently? Or was there something you did around your friends you wouldn’t have done at home? When I was a kid, we weren’t allowed to use words such as butt, fart, or pee. It was bottom, stinker, and potty. When I was REALLY little, it wasn’t a big deal, but when I got into elementary school, it became a bit of an embarrassment, and then it became a battle between remembering to use bottom, stinker, and potty at home, while using butt, fart, and pee at school around my friends. I swore when I grew up, my kids weren’t going to have to use bottom, stinker, and potty. WELL, GUESS WHAT? The first time my then two-year-old daughter said the word “butt”, I cringed, because apparently it was burned into my brain that little kids shouldn’t say those words and it sounded awful to my ears. So now “bottom”, “toot”, and “potty” are all used at our house, with an occasional slip up of “fart” and “pee” from my six-year-old, who has attended one year of elementary school…LOL

I also recently got an email from my Auntie, who was remembering from her childhood how much she hated to have to remake her bed with clean sheets. I have to include a portion of the email as she typed it, because it cracked me up: “I slept in, so got up around 9:30...Felt good, and the sheets were clean and there is nothing more glorious than clean sheets. I have been a rebel against them since childhood as Mother made us change them every Saturday. I used to scream and kick and throw myself on to my bare mattress (after she'd tear the sheets off on Sat AM while I was trying to watch cartoons) and cry, and SWEAR, if I ever grew up I'd never change my bed. SO, I grew up, and said NOT! She also made me vacuum under my bed every Sat. AM. To THIS DAY, I refuse to vacuum under my bed. There is a giant spider (I AM SURE) under there scoffing at me every Saturday morning...BUT. I. DON'T. CARE.”

(don’t worry, she really does clean her sheets, and I’m totally with her about vacuuming under the bed!)

I’d love to hear what you swore you’d do differently as an adult, and whether or not you stuck with your plan!!

Guest Blog from Manic Mommy

Stephanie Elliot
Aka Manic Mommy http://www.manicmommy.blogspot.com/

School starts in two weeks. 14 days. I am teeter-tottering on both ends of the spectrum. Anxiously awaiting the start of school, but also not really ready for summer to be over. This is my first year that all three of my kids will FINALLY be in school for full days. Yes, my youngest, my Tukey, will start first grade. I remember when I was in the throes of the diaper warfare, down in the trenches, with interrupted sleep every single night, with teethers and babies waking to feed, and toddlers having night terrors.
I remember thinking, “OK, the year they are all in school together full time, I am going to take THAT year off. Completely off, and just SLEEP. For the whole year because I figured it was going to take a full year of sleeping every single day while they were at school for me to catch up on the missed sleep from those first five years of parenthood.
Do I feel this way now? Maybe. I long for afternoon naps on the couch under my favorite blankie, while the sun streams through our skylight window. I long to turn off the phones, rest my eyes, to lay there uninterrupted for even just a fraction of an hour. To close my eyes and think, “OK, what do I want to do now? What can I do for myself today?”
But I’m not going to do this. I’m not going to go into this self-induced hibernation like I thought I wanted to. Even though I do still kind of want to. Because there’s still so much to do. There’s the grocery shopping, and the laundry, and oh God, do I ever-so-much loathe the laundry! And there’s trips to Target and back-to-school shopping, which I never do till late September, because, hey, come on, I’m frugal, and I’ll do that when all the cool stuff is gone and there’s just crappy stuff left that I can get for really cheap. Because my kids are still pretty young, and maybe they won’t realize that I’ve just bought them the leftover back-to-school crappy stuff?
And well, while I kind of would like to take a year-long hiatus and catch up on the sleeping, I also kind of want to … okay, I can say it here… I kind of want to work. Don’t shoot me. It’s the kind of work I love. This. Writing about how I feel and sharing the thoughts with those who understand what it’s like, or maybe those who have not yet been there, and need to know that there is a light at the end of that really dark and smelly “I-will-die-if-I-have-to-change-another-blowout-diaper-at-four-a.m.” tunnel.
There really is a light.
Because they do stop waking in the middle of the night. And they do stop needing that night-time feeding. And they do stop wearing diapers. And they do grow in all of their teeth and stop teething. And they will start using the toilet and wiping their own butts. And they will start using utensils and napkins and regular cups, and then they’ll start asking for play dates, and they’ll go off to the neighbor’s house and you won’t hear from them for hours and you’ll sit at home and wonder, “Where the heck have my babies gone, and don’t they need me anymore?”They will. And that’s why maybe I don’t need a year off to nap.

Am I Raising a Target-a-holic?

Steph is away for the week and has asked me Elaine from The Miss Elaine-ous Life to step in for the day !!!

I am pretty sure that most of us “mommy bloggers” take a liking to Target (a.k.a Tar-jay, Tar-zhay, etc.). Perhaps it’s because whenever anyone in our facet of blogging mentions giving away a gift card from there I tend to picture an episode of Oprah’s favorite things where everyone in the audience is screaming and crying (from joy of course). And due to the amount of comments on any post I’ve seen in which free money to the bull’s eye is up for grabs, I just assume we all likey. I have to admit my heart starts to palpitate a little faster whenever I come across such a generous giveaway. At the beginning of the year I was lucky enough to win such a giveaway and be the recipient of a decent denomination of free cash to my favorite store and you would’ve thought that Miss Winfrey herself had shown up at my door I was so excited. Just proves it doesn’t take much…
Of course free money or not, I am a frequent customer and my four-year old seems to be following suit on his preference for the place. Whenever we go there he wants to head straight for the toys, of course and he also likes to check out the food section (yes, this IS definitely my kid) and the dollar spot. I’m afraid that’s my fault . I super puffy heart love the dollar spot. And of course who doesn’t need more junk in their lives, right? (oh me, I SO don’t but it doesn’t matter…) Before I even really get into the store my cart is already full of “to do” notepads, ice trays shaped like shamrocks and cheap water color paints. Because who doesn’t like a cool drink with frozen shamrocks in March while writing their to-do list and watching their child paint, right? Certainly nobody I know…
But back to the four-year old. Yeah he likes the store but he also LOVES the catalogs we get in the mail. At the beginning of summer they sent one out with all the summer-ish toys and he practically slept with the dang thing and at this point it’s a little tattered. He pointed out 5 or 10 things he wanted in there and continued to do so over and over for about two weeks. Well, guess what came in the mail the other day? The back to school goodies catalog from Tar-jay. And guess who has already found his most favoritist things in there and wants to constantly call my attention to them? Yep, you’re right.
So since I know you are so interested let me just go ahead and share with you too the items that his little heart desires. And if you have your Back to School catalog handy, please feel free to follow along. On pg 9 he would like the kid’s meal that has mac n’ cheese, even though he’s not really a fan. Next, on pg 19 he wants the recorder at the top left. He doesn’t even know what a recorder is, but it’s mostly green (favorite color) so he’s in for that too. Oh and I almost forgot, he would like the play kitchen on pg 16 because he wants a kitchen really bad. And he doesn’t really care what color it is (pink is JUUUST fine). See we’re not into gender roles around here. Really were not. He would also like the entire bedroom set-up on page 20 even though he has a perfectly fine room already. And if you would be so kind as to flip to page 30, he wants the polka dotted tea set that you see there. Because my boy, quite a fan of the tea (not). Lastly, he’s in for all of page 34 because he loves ANY.THING. Thomas and the Geoair plane thing is just a bonus.
If you do not already have your fall catalog I am sorry for my rant but feel free to return to this post for future reference once you’ve received it. And be sure to pocket the $5 coupon on the back for a $50 purchase or more (not hard for us to do) as I did. So, no, I am not giving away free moolah to Tar-jay, but they are ! : ) And don’t worry, I won’t go there about how elated I was to see that coupon. Thank me later.

So, here’s your Tip of the Day: Make sure to hide said catalog from your kids when it comes in the mail. That’s what I plan to do from now on…

Thanks to Steph for letting me “take the reins” at her place for a day – what an honor! I love reading her blog and keeping up with her life. You can usually find me at The Miss Elaine-ous Life on the daily.

I'm outta here!

If you received an update in your reader today that read blog bling I apologize, I am making some much needed changes to my blog so it was not my intent to blast out awards that you all have so graciously given me in a "hey look at me fashion" I also have been reminded by my mistake that I have a few awards that I have failed to post and give out. I will take care of that when I get back.

I am off for a week at the beach and I can't wait, last year was a complete dud due to rain and our house guest that week. This year the forecast looks wonderful and the house guest is no longer with us!

I have lined up some great guest blogger's for my site next week. Drum roll please!
Stepping in for me next will be:
The Miss Elaine-ous Life
MaNiC MoMMy - WHaT i aM iS WHo i WaNNa Be
Laughing Leah Loves Lilies

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

See you in about 7 days, WooHoo!

It was bound to happen....

Monday afternoon I get a call from my husband "I am having a really bad day" he says no hello, hi hows your day, just those 7 words. When I asked what was wrong he said he had just had a car accident. He quickly said I am fine I think because he heard my gasp. He went on to explain the damage and told me it happened because he had been cut off. Shit happens right? I was just happy he was ok.

Fast forward to dinner, we are all at the table, and Dan is not saying much I can tell he is still steaming, at this point I know better to ask about the accident. After about 10 minutes of what did you do today talk he starts to talk about the accident and says that he was in a rush and didn't know where he was going because he GPS crapped out then this lady cut in front of him. Ah ha I think there is the real story is the GPS, I am always on him when we are in the car together about messing with the GPS. I sat there quietly biting my tongue. Then he says the GPA didn't have any juice because you (me) took the wrong cord out of the car for the portable DVD. What! I am thinking to myself, somehow this is going to be my fault? I again sat holding my tongue no reason to add fuel to an already huge fire. Then I hear and "I didn't get a police report" I swear to you I was ready to hit the ceiling. This from the man who gave me hell 8 years ago for not getting a police report when I was hit from behind?????

I've said nothing, I am venting here. He is safe which is really all that matters, the car and be fixed and even if it couldn't it is just an object. But you better believe I am sitting on this one and it may be pulled out of my arsenal when he decides to get on my case about some stupid mistake! :)

Allie's Baptism

As some of you may remember I was asked by my best friend to be her daughter's Godmother; over the weekend (on my birthday) Allison Paige was baptized. Magin is a great mommy and I am honored that she and her husband Jim asked me to be Allie's Godmother. Below are some of my favorite pictures from Sunday.

Friday Hodge Podge

Hello from my office at home!

I returned from my trip, all went well but I have to say air travel is not the glam life it use to be when I was a kid! I spent 6 hours in a Chicago airport to have flight after flight canceled, I witnessed people screaming , crying and just simply dumb founded at their travel woes.

This weekend is a busy one for us, the last busy one before our family beach vacation. The weekend starts tonight with a baseball game for the hubby and I a date night of sorts!

Saturday is filled with errands and chores, the start of packing for vacation, a BBQ of a work colleague of Dan's ending with book club for me with the neighborhood girls. The book this time was nineteen minutes and while I found it to be a well written book I must say that I was a bit disturbed reading it. I hear this author has a couple of other books out that are just as well written, I am hoping they aren't quite as disturbing.

Sunday is my Official Birthday!!!! I know I have been celebrating for a week or more but I love birthdays especially mine. This year though I get to share my special day with my God Daughter Allie. She is being baptized on Sunday at 1pm. I haven't seen her since a few days after she was born so I am looking forward to hanging out with her!

Sunday after noon early evening we have a beach planning dinner with the other 2 families that we are going to the beach with! should be a good time and I am sure a few martinis will be enjoyed!
