Casual Friday: Jeans, Boots, Long Sweater

I thought that yesterday was going to be a glorious day. After a bizarre mishap which caused my order to be canceled, I was finally set to get my new John Fluevog Bondgirl boots. (They were my reward for running the marathon and finishing a draft of the last chapter of my dissertation.) However, my euphoria had faded by the time the UPS delivery person had made it to his next stop. My boots were too tight to zip up all the way over my calves. I knew that Fluevog boots could run tight, so I had ordered a half size larger than I normally wear in order to get some extra calf-circumference. Because of this and the fact that I have a couple of other pairs that fit my calves, I never doubted that these would work. I was so frustrated that I left them sitting on the dining room table and went back to work on cover letters and class prep all afternoon with a really terrible attitude. I knew the situation could be rectified, but after weeks of work and then weeks of waiting, I was pissed. I wanted my reward and I wanted to wear it right then and there.

It does make me angry that so many women have such a hard time finding boots that fit their calves. I wish designers would ruminate a little bit more on the fact that the most purchased clothing size for women in the US is a size 14 and make more clothing and boots that fit accordingly. The fashion industry should also send more diverse body types down the runway. I could go on and on about this, but I think I'll save it for another post.

At any rate, I had been hoping that I would be able to wear the new Bondgirl boots for the first time today, but since I had a morning meeting and a class to teach, I knew I wouldn't be able to drop them off with my shoe repair guys until the afternoon. And I know that it doesn't do much good to dwell on anger. Taking action is always better (at least for me). I had to make do with the selection of boots I already have. This morning the weather did not look terribly auspicious, so I felt like jeans, boots, and layers were my best option. I went with my cowboy boots, dark denim, a yellow top, and a long sweater.

It was a casual outfit for a casual Friday right before Halloween. The day ended up brightening up a lot and being deliciously warm for the end of October. I would have taken my class outside, but it was just too windy. Before class, my students and I talked about our costume plans, and I brought candy to make the day a little bit more festive. Despite, or perhaps because of, the sugar rush, my students were even more on the ball than they usually are. (This is saying something because this particular class is small and made up of quite motivated and invested students.) It was the kind of day that gives you a teaching high.

Because of the class and the weather, my so-called work week ended perfectly. I dropped my shoes off for repair, and I was delighted that my cobbler said that my boots would be ready for pick up within a few days. I have plans this weekend for article revisions, grading, a couple of Halloween parties, and a massage at a spa (a post-marathon gift from my fiance).

Autumn Inspired Neutrals

As I've said before, fall is my favorite season. I love the foliage. I love football. I love the sense of a new academic beginning that each fall brings. I also love the return of boots, cardigans, and jackets into my wardrobe rotation. This term Mondays and Wednesdays are long days that involve office hours, teaching two classes, and commuting in between them. Part of how I make it through is to wear something that makes me feel fabulous. Yesterday I put together an outfit that combined the browns, greys, golds, and deep greens of the autumn.

Inspired a bit by Irina's design that mixed so many browns last week on Project Runway, I played with different shades of brown in my blouse, pencil skirt, (barely visible) tights, and boots, combined with grey in the blouse, and green and gold in the cardigan, and gold in the bracelet that I used to add just a hint of extra color to the overall look. I built the outfit around the skirt, which I paid less than $10 for on clearance. It's probably become my most worn piece of clothing this season.

I'd love to hear what your sources of outfit inspiration are! Do you have an item of clothing that you find yourself wearing a lot these days? How do you keep it from getting boring?

Say hello to my little friend......Skeleton

Just won this Skeleton pendant necklace on ebay a few minutes ago! Bought it for 8 dollars only. The seller normally never ship ouside Australia, but I was lucky. Hopefully the seller will ship it fast..........

Appropriate Conference Attire?

We academics attend conferences. It's all part of the allegedly (according to FOX News) cushy lifestyle that we have in the academy. Whenever I go to a conference, I usually have a plan for my 10 pages of text. However, I usually don't have a plan for what I'm going to wear until I start packing to leave. While the business formal power suit is always an option in my field, I tend to go for dresses and cardigans these days, especially for smaller, regional conferences. I've seen an incredible range of attire at some of the conferences I've attended -- from the impeccably tailored suits (both for men and women) to beat up jeans, sneakers, and hoodies. How do you dress for conferences? Do you feel that dressing up or down helps you in any way with your paper presentation (and presentation of self)? I'm curious as well how the standards differ from the Humanities to the Sciences. So do share! What's your conference go-to outfit?

I got mail

Normally my mailbox is full of bills, but lately I have received nice stuff bought on ebay. This vintage silver studded sweater arrived today. Put a bid on it before I went to sleep a week ago, and was surpised when I woke up as a "winner".... im no more an ebay-virgin!!! he he.....

Disney Half Marathon Training has begun....

I am not sure that is was the smartest thing for me to sign up for my first half marathon a mere 4 months after giving birth but I did and I can't back out now!

So the training has begun my longest race run was 6.2 miles (10K) I am up to 5 miles now. My time is not great but I am building up my endurance. Lucky for me I have a seasoned Marathon runner preparing my training workouts for me.

So if any of you have training tips or if you are running in the Disney Half Marathon in January 2010 drop me a line, I would love to hear from you and what you are doing to prepare.

Weekend Wear

I love the weekends! I really like relaxing my rule about no caffeine consumption after noon (during the week, I risk serious nighttime jitteryness if I drink coffee after about 2pm). I revel in the freedom of being able to structure my Saturday and Sunday how I want to. I love talking to my mom on the phone every Saturday morning and having brunch with my fiance on Sundays. I also am really happy to reconnect with the more casual side of my wardrobe on the weekend.

Yesterday I cowgirled up for a day of class prepping and grading and an outing to interview a cake vendor and to have lunch with my fiance, my man of honor, and his husband afterward. I wanted an outfit that was comfy and casual, but that also looked put together. I don't like looking like a slob when I'm meeting with vendors. Yesterday was rainy, windy, and chilly day here, so I went with a layered look on top and skinny jeans tucked into tall boots on bottom.* I was snug and warm and felt chic as I tasted cake, as I walked my dog, and as I wrote a lecture about East Asia and the spread of Buddhism.

Do you dress differently on the weekend? Do you tend to keep an entirely different schedule on the weekend then you do during the week? Do you rely on the weekend to catch up with your own work outside of your teaching and service responsibilities or do you take advantage of the weekend to catch up on blessed sleep and to catch up with friends?

*I'm happy that the skinny jeans and boots look seems to still be in fashion -- although I would probably still wear it the look anyway. It's really practical for gross weather and has such an effortless kind of sophistication to it.

Get on the boat....

If youre on your way to pack down all your summer clothes- you should keep your striped t-shirt in your closet. The classic marine trend will be back next season....
I got a sneak peak on BikBoks spring/summer collection on SPALT pr this week, and Im in love with this anchor tee......sail away!!!!!!

Bridesmaid Revisited

Last night I went out with a couple of friends for a night on the town. We went to the opera and then to have a few drinks. It was my first night out in far too long. Between training for a marathon and trying to finish my dissertation, I haven't had much of a social life the past couple of months. With the marathon under my belt and the last body chapter of my dissertation drafted, I finally felt like I could go out for more than just dinner. Fortunately for me, this renewed ability to return to society coincided with a production of Pagliacci.

I love going to the opera for so many reasons. Opera music was frequently playing in my house when I was a child. The voices of the performers absolutely amaze and thrill me with their beauty, grace, and power. I also love going to the opera because I get to dress up to the nines and put on my red lipstick (aka my lady face).

When I was deciding what I would wear for the opera, I immediately thought about wearing a little black dress. I was in a fabulous wedding this summer and my friend had allowed all of us to simply wear a black cocktail dress of our choice, so I chose one that I purchased on sale at White House Black Market. I thought the opera was the perfect opportunity to get another use out of this bridesmaid's dress. Last night I wore it with white tights and red and black, open-toed high heels. I had been wanting to wear a black dress with white tights for a while, and this gave me the perfect excuse. Something about the pairing just seems so glamorous to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't find my black shawl to wear with it. However, luckily, it was a mild night, so a shawl wasn't really necessary. This dress could easily make it to another opera or to the ballet in the winter with a shawl or a little dressy cardigan or shrug. It could also easily make it to another wedding or get yet another life as a party dress.

Often one of the biggest drawbacks of being in a wedding is having to spend money on a dress that you'll never wear again. On a graduate student stipend or even the salary of an academic, this can be brutal to the budget. Have you ever successfully repurposed a bridesmaid dress in your wardrobe? How? What do you like to wear to dress up for a night on the town?

why buy new stuff?

Hello everybody. Today I write for you about a woman I appreciate a lot: Angela Bowie, (or Angie). But now let’s start with some part of her bio I took from Wikipedia.com. Angela Bowie (born Mary Angela Barnett in 1949 in Cyprus) is an American cover girl, model, actress, and musician. She’s the ex- wife of musician David Bowie. She met David Bowie in 1969, at the age of 19. According to David Bowie, they met through their mutual friendship with Chinese-American record executive Dr. Calvin Mark Lee. She married Bowie one year later, on 19 March 1970 at Bromley Register Office in Beckenham Lane, Kent. On 30 May 1971, David and Angie Bowie had a son they named Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones. Zowie later preferred to be known as Joe/Joey, although now he has reverted to the name Duncan Jones. David Bowie wrote the songs "The Prettiest Star" and "Golden Years" about her. Angela often accompanied him on his international concert tours, which included the U.S., Japan and Europe. In 1973, she appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson Angela also performed on The Mike Douglas Show in early 1975 she auditioned for the leading role in the television series Wonder Woman, but the part eventually went to Lynda Carter. She also modelled for photographer Terry O'Neill. Angie and David Bowie separated after eight years of marriage and divorced on 8 February 1980, in Switzerland. She later called it "a marriage of convenience" for both, and settled for £300,000. She then began a long-term relationship with punk musician Drew Blood (real name Andrew Lipka) and, on 24 July 1980 gave birth to their daughter, Stacia Larranna Celeste Lipka, in Mendocino, California. I think that Angie is a really interesting and beautiful woman, she helped David to create his alter ego Ziggy Stardust and promote his career in the music business . Seems that a famous Rolling Stones song is dedicated to her: “ Angie” written in 1973 about a relationship he had with David Bowie's wife Angela, Jagger denies this. But the legend is still alive. She also wrote a book in 1993 “ Backstage passes: life on the wild side with David Bowie”, revealing lots of gossips about her life with the singer and with all her friends…The old photos of her family with David are very cute, if you haven’t seen it yet please take a look.

Think Pink

On days like today, when the weather is rainy and grey, it's especially hard to roll myself out of bed. Wouldn't it be so much better to stay curled up with blankets and hot coffee (or tea with honey and lemon) and alternate reading Renaissance dramas and early modern history with fashion magazines and blogs? Unfortunately, neither my dog nor my teaching schedule allow me to shirk my duties just because the sun is hidden away behind wet, gloomy clouds. I do find that on days like this wearing a favorite colorful outfit or a fun, colorful accessory really helps to elevate my mood. Today I chose to wear pink for cheer and in celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. (Perhaps I was also thinking about breasts because of that article in the Chronicle of Higher Education about cleavage and the job market.)

Here I'm wearing my pink and wine colored John Fluevog boots, pink stockings, which I have somehow magically managed to run in two years of ownership, my uber soft and comfy grey dress, a pink scarf that I salvaged from an old blouse that no longer fits, and my pink jacket from Zara. Armed with my pink umbrella, I went out to face the world, to read student drafts, and to teach class.

While I have yet to purchase anything from The Breast Cancer Site Store, I do try to remember to click for free mammograms on a daily basis and have registered for numerous Susan G. Komen events and will no doubt continue to do so. I also think there's a bag of pink peanut M&Ms calling my name.... These are small ways to make a difference. Call it idealism if you will, but I like to think that we do make a difference, when we show compassion, when we support charity, when we teach a text with enthusiasm and insight, when we hold the door for someone, when we say thank you, when we think pink.

Holy bunny- what a fun fashionshoot we had today!!!!!

When I met beautiful Emilie voe.blogg.no at a tvshow one month ago, I knew she would be the perfect model for a fashionshoot in topp. I was so happy she said yes(and that her teacher let her take one day off at school) She is only 13 years old, but wow- so talented.
We started up at nine this morning in the studio. Makeup artist Isabella did a perfect makeup, photographer Mathias Fossum took the pictures, and I did the styling.
as you can see; inspired by the catwalk look of Chanel and Louis Vuitton...
The bunny ears is a result of my yesterdays DIY-project... Im very happy with the result.....
and I will post more pics from the shoot in a few weeks, when the magazine is out!

Isabelle is 2 months today..and a cutie :)

Isabelle is 2 months old today and I must say her personality is starting to come out. check out the big smiles she gave me this week.

So cute!

Checking me and the camera out

Don't want you to think she is happy all the time :)

The Skinny on Skin Health

In response to my recent beauty product recommendation, one of our readers, thechemist-coture wrote in and offered some expertise based on his knowledge of chemistry and his delight in pampering the skin. He had the following to say:

"I love beauty regimens. Nothing lifts my spirits, or my baggy under eye, like devoted personal pampering. But behind all the crèmes, potions and chemical concoctions I wondered, not surprisingly, what was the science behind the facial potpourri’s of our beloved regimens. To dig deeper into how we make ourselves look lifted, rested and restored I thought I might do some research into the science of skin. In my quest for the dermatological truth, I found that taking care of our skin’s health can be divided into three areas: cleaning, nutrition and aging.

"As for cleaning, there are loads of scrubs, washes, soaps and lathers that claim to be for any of a variety of skin types. But overwhelmingly dermatologist suggest an unscented, 30% moisturizing, dye free soap for daily cleansing. Nothing with extreme detergents. Mild is the name of the game when finding the right facial bar. Special soaps such as acne creams containing a range of chemicals like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can dry out skin if overused. So only use these during an outbreak, not as a prophylactic. So when it comes to cleaning, stick with bar soaps like Ivory. Unscented, undyed and non-deodorant. This soap is the cleanest of clean for healthy skin.

"The next two areas, aging and nutrition are really one set of cause and effect. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and your diet has an enormous effect on it’s health. And while many of the skin care products on the market lay claim to give results from the mixture of vitamin, minerals, retinol(vitamin A), and chamomile-rose petal-serum-oil-of-the-gods-awesomeness. The truth is that while you need (most) of these awesome things, it is much better for you to get them from the food you eat than from topical application. That doesn’t mean that these products don’t work (I mean they sell like hot cakes, somebody is getting results!) It’s just that it is so much better for you when you get the nutrition your skin needs naturally. Getting nutrients form the “inside” where the skin is growing is like feeding a tree at the root. Think of it this way—taking a daily multivitamin orally is a great way to get every mineral vitamin and metal you need for the day in one pill. But while this gets us the dose we need, our body doesn’t uptake as much of those awesome nutrients as when we eat some green leafy veggies simply because that isn’t the form that your body expects and is made to process. So put down the eye-lifting-micro-derm-smoothing cream and pick up a carrot, blackberries, and plums (to name a few). And don’t forget the 8 glasses of water a day to wash away all those nasty toxins that make our skin blotchy and oily. 'Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look,' (Samantha Heller, MS, RD)

"Lastly, I feel that my dermatology summary wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t say something about sunscreen. You’ve heard it before, but it’s so so very true. The sun is the enemy when it comes to skin health. So apply strong (high SPF) and often. Remember that even in the middle of winter the suns UV-B rays are still coming in just as strong to attack our precious skin’s DNA. This is the perfect time to have a little moisturizer action added to your routine. But remember to keep it mild. Keep away from products with any oils or PEG-ylated lipids in the top 5 ingredients. Of course it must be said that just like your overall health, your skin’s health is unique to you. These tips are the basis for good skin health, and may need to be supplemented."

Regarding, thechemist-coture's observations about nutrition and skin health, from my own personal experience and the fount of knowledge that is the professional make-up artist, who is doing my make-up for my wedding, I couldn't agree more. Even if it's pure placebo effect or more related to self-perception, I feel like my skin looks better when I drink 8 glasses of water a day and when I eat a nutrient-rich diet, including some healthy fats from my beloved olive oil.

As we head into the middle of the semester (or quarter), it's a good time to remember to take time to pamper ourselves (it's all too easy to get bogged down with article revisions, mid-term grading, lecture prep, and student emails), and one of the best things that we can do to take good care of ourselves is to care for our skin. This is the kind of pampering that will pay us back ten-fold (and hopefully through the tenure process).

Men idag ankom min første pakke i posten. Kan desverre ikke vise kjøpene mine før konkurransen er over - men hvis noen gjetter hvilke kupp jeg har gjort lover jeg premie.. he he...

Budget Beauty: Make-Up Product of the Month

A dear friend of mine used to frequently scold me for my lack of a nighttime skin care routine. She was horrified to learn that I washed my face with dial soap in the shower and that I almost never took my make-up off before going to bed. (I did brush and floss, though, so don't think I was a total sloven!) I have in the past couple of years tried to mend my ways, and I have gotten much better. Of course, there are still the occasional nights where I'm too tired or inebriated to do anything besides brush my teeth. However, for the most part, I've settled into a routine of removing my make-up and moisturizing before bed. Because in the past few months I started noticing bags and dark circles under my eyes with an alarming frequency, I have also recently incorporated using an eye cream -- Bioré's See the Future Fortifying Eye Cream -- into my nighttime beauty routine. It feels light and soothing on my skin after a long day, and it does seem to really minimize any puffiness and bags under the eyes that I have. I've also taken to using it in the morning, as well. Just applying a little bit around the eye area before I put on concealer. Since I started using it, I've felt like I haven't needed to apply as much concealer under my eyes.

Do you have a special skin care routine? What are your favorite skin care products?
