The Evolution of Flip Flops

The Evolution of Flip Flops

By Diana J. Smith

Not so long ago, flip flops for men were only considered a thing for the beach. Nobody really thought that they will become the prince of footwear and become a summer must-have. These sandals, considered a lowly rubber thong, have managed to evolve to leather and other materials. They have become so popular that designer brands have created special lines just for them. Their fame has even spread to the World Wide Web with blogs devoted to hailing their attributes.

Flip flops have become tremendously popular because they are amazingly comfortable to wear. On warm summer days, this contraption made basically of a sole and strap, are the perfect footwear because they give the foot breathing space. The soft, spongy soles that are often present in these slippers give comfort to the heels of your feet.

These slip-on shoes were originally part of every guy's beach outfit. This purpose of the flip flop has not waned one bit. In fact, there are brands devoted to making beach sandals like Havaianas, Ipanema and Reef. Beach sandals are usually made of rubber to endure constant wetness and the other rigors of walking on a sandy beach.

Not only are flip flops favored beachwear but they have become stylish footwear for summer casual wear. The usual rubber material of the shoe is exchanged for a more chic leather material. They have since evolved from beach walks to concrete pavement and have taken on a more preppy look. Not only do men wear them at the beach but also when going to the mall or dining out with friends. The revolutionary sandals like the Lacost Palison leather footwear, are now more classy and savvy.

Flip flops used to be looked down upon because they were cheap and were so ordinary. Nobody used to take a second glance at them when seen at a footwear store. Now that they have evolved, the price tag has also taken a new look. Although there are still the cheaper rubber slippers that can be bought for less than $10, expensive ones have a heftier price tag. The Peche Platinum crocodile flip flop costs $400. Prada thongs are priced at $360. The Gucci Sunset Thongs are priced at $475 and Salvatore Ferragamo Logo Thong Sandals at $420. Manolo Blahnik's flip flops are priced at a whopping $1,145. The most expensive flip flops were sold by H. Stern at the astronomical price of $17,000.

Although it would be luxurious to wear one of those expensive brands, the more important thing when choosing a sandal is that you are comfortable. Sure, take a look at the style and the price tag but make sure that you get a pair that will fit you comfortably.
