Evening Poetry

Photography by Glen Allsop.

Thought I'd share a few beautiful images, plus a poem that stole my heart a long time ago. Take a moment in your evening to enjoy.

Wild Geeseby Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Mila Kunis and Oscar-Winner Melissa Leo's Oscars Hair

We would like to share with our readers: hair how-to videos featuring celeb stylist Creighton Bowman recreating Mila Kunis’ glam 30s finger waves and the soft updo he created on Oscar-winner Melissa Leo for last night’s red carpet.

The videos :

Creighton’s breakdown on how he achieved Melissa’s look:

The initial idea for Melissa Leo’s Oscars hairstyle was to create something effortless and carefree à La Dolce Vita, but the look also needed to be about the silhouette: I developed a style that would complement the dramatic collar of her dress and elongate the line of her body.

I started out by applying Leonor Greyl Lait Luminescence Bi-Phase Detangling Milk and Condition Naturelle Heat Protecting Styling Spray to Melissa’s towel-dried hair. I used Gel à La Kératine, an alcohol-free styling gel, on her hairline to hold all of the tiny, curly strands in place.

Then, I blow-dried her hair with a medium-sized round brush so it wouldn’t be completely straight: I wanted a little curl at the ends. One of the best things about doing a round-brush blow-dry is that it enables you to lock in shine even if you are creating a rough, modern texture.

After drying, I worked a few drops of Serum de Soie Sublimateur, a silicone-free anti-frizz serum, through Melissa’s hair; created a section from ear to ear across the back of her head; and pulled the section up into a high, tight ponytail. Then, I loosely incorporated the sides and top of the hair into the ponytail to achieve softness while maintaining tightness at the nape of her neck. It was very important to keep it tight in the back to avoid interfering with the collar of Melissa’s dress.

I wrapped the pieces into a high chignon and secured everything with Voluforme setting and styling spray. Before the red carpet, Melissa and I had a bet going about her hair: she said she would let me do an updo if I could achieve the whole look with four hairpins or less. I like to call it “The Four Hairpin Challenge.” I knew that I could definitely do that with Leonor Greyl products!

After a little backcombing at the crown of Melissa’s head, the final step was to tease out the pieces in the front. My method to create that sort of effortlessness is to pull everything back and let whatever falls out fall out. If you force strands out to frame the face, it looks too specific, but if you let them fall out naturally, it produces a very soft effect.

Through his founding of theEndometriosis Foundation of America, Dr. Seckin has lent a voice and sense of urgency to endometriosis.

· What is Endometriosis?

During monthly menstruation, the female body sheds the uterine lining (endometrium); for women with endometriosis, menstrual fluids leak back into the body in areas outside of the uterus, leading to the development of painful and invasive nodules, adhesions and inflammation of surrounding areas.

· Who does it affect?

This reproductive disorder afflicts an estimated 176 million women and girls globally; 8.5 million in North America alone.

· What are possible signs?

These may include severe cramping and chronic pelvic pain, severe painful periods, infertility and pain associated with sex.

· What happens?

seckin_home2Endometriosis is a leading cause of infertility and chronic pelvic pain; while treatable, early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial, as length and degree of treatment increases. Many patients are incorrectly informed by their doctors and treated for symptoms - but not the disease itself.

Leading extensive research and collaboration with scientists, women’s health professionals and patients, as well as continued outreach and education efforts, Dr. Seckin and the EFA strive to further develop public knowledge of endometriosis and promote early diagnosis and effective intervention.

The Most Expensive Bra in the World

The Everyday: Introducing Wedding Photographer Tyler Branch

All photos by Tyler Branch.

Happy Monday, all!

Lately I've been obsessed with photograhers who have a knack for capturing the everyday. There's something so beautiful about finding grace in the tiny moments that would be easy to miss if we didn't stop to observe them carefully.

This series hopes to remind you of the way an image can witness the whimsical, to document the allure of a landscape or profile, and to capture life's radiance.

Wedding photographer Tyler Branch has a way of grasping happiness in portraits -- not only of the bride and groom on their special day, but also the loving guest who support them. His ability to move between the close up and the wide is also fascinating, and brings a lot of emotion and depth to his work.

Checking out his site takes my breath away.

GAADfly - Two Month Check In

February has been a blur of research talks, travel, class prep, and grading.  The month flew by, and, as in January, I had essentially no time to even think about shopping - except for maybe at an airport.  (I did indulge in a new lipstick from Body Shop during one lengthy layover.)  The only real moment of temptation came when I visited Shabby Apple to pick out which dress we should giveaway to one of our readers.  (Don't forget to enter!)  I put one of their dresses on my birthday wishlist, but all the other items I'm hoping I'll get for my birthday are reading, writing, or travel related.

Right now not shopping for clothes, shoes, or accessories seems a lot easier than I expected it to.  Sure, there are moments when I want to shop - because I'm bored, tired, stressed, cranky.  But then I just go look at my closet and dresser crammed full of clothes, even with a laundry hamper overflowing with dirty clothes sitting in my spacious closet and a basket full of laundered, clean clothes waiting to be folded next to my bed, and I know without a doubt that I do not need to shop right now.  I know that, in terms of wardrobe, I have everything that I need right now, and most of what I want.

It doesn't hurt that I am still working my way through un(der)utilized items in my closet, such as this pair of shorts that I purchased at H&M back in November.1  Saturday marked the second time that I'd worn them and the first time they were documented for the blog.  While I still think shorts + tights is a little trendier and more youthful than I want to go for the classroom or even for office hours, I love the look for a Saturday of grading, running errands, including getting my hair cut, and taking my spouse out for a birthday dinner.
 1. Shorts - H&M, Tank and Cardi - New York & Co. (both remixed), Tights - We Love Colors (remixed), Boots - John Fluevog Bondgirls (remixed)
I do anticipate that March might be a little bit harder.  I have fewer professional spring clothes.  My birthday is March, and I usually spend the entire day shopping.  Hypothetically, I will also be quite busy, but not working at the breakneck pace I've had to maintain for the first two months of 2011.  How have you established new and different habits in the past?  What have you done to reward yourself when you're trying to get away from a system of material rewards?

Top Five Honolulu Tourist Attractions

Top Five Honolulu Tourist Attractions

By Peter J Wu

There is so much to do in Honolulu that you may be overwhelmed by all of your options. This article outlines the top five tourist destinations so you can make the most out of your dream vacation.

1) Diamond Head: This is the most famous volcanic crater in the world, and has breathtaking views. You will have to hike for approximately one hour; the trail is rated easy to moderate, but it can be steep in some spots. Keep in mind that there is little shade along the way, so you may want to schedule the hike for early morning and bring water with you. The site also has an observation deck and tunnel, so remember your flashlight as well.

2) Pearl Harbor: There are several tours available, with tour guides providing live historical narrations of that fateful day in history that will never be forgotten.

3) Paradise Cove Luau: You cannot go to Hawaii and miss out on the luau experience. While there are several places you can go to see a luau, Paradise Cove is one of the best. It is more than just a luau; it is a cultural experience with dinner, shows, arts and crafts and more.

4) Iolani Palace: A national historic landmark, Iolani palace has been restored to its former grandeur and offers a spectacular tour of the official residence of former Hawaiian royalty, King Kalakaua and his successor Queen Lili'uokalani. The grounds are just as impressive as the palace itself.

5) Manoa Falls: If you are a more experienced hiker, you will want to plan a trip to Manoa Falls. The hike is rated easy, but goes through rainforest, and a bamboo forest. You will be rewarded with an incredible view of the falls, which is a vertical drop of 150 feet into a small pool of water. Remember to bring drinking water on this hike, and note that you cannot swim, as the bottom of the pool is filled with boulders.

These are just a few of the breathtaking sites that Honolulu has to offer; ask your travel agent if any of these trips can be included as part of your travel package. If you are like most people, this is a trip of a lifetime, so you will want to book at least one or two of these tourist attractions. Honolulu is rich in history and culture and you will be hard-pressed to find friendlier people.

Find The Perfect Little Black Dress For Your Body Type

Find The Perfect Little Black Dress For Your Body Type

By Kostov Konstantin

The little black dress is the signature staple of any woman's wardrobe. This is the dress that can be worn to a spring wedding, a winter funeral, and to a high school reunion with just a few changes in accessories. The little black dress is always flattering and should have a slim, form fitting shape that brings out the best features of the individual woman's body. There are many forms of the little black dress, and every woman should have one just in case of last minute special events. Just a few additions of fashionable accessories can make it feel like you're wearing it for the first time.

A woman with a full, apple shaped figure might have a petite, round body. She might be self conscious about her tummy area. If you are an apple shape, clingy fabrics will emphasize a rounded stomach. A dress that draws the eye upwards will help with this problem. A short dress with show off shapely legs, and can be worn with black or charcoal leggings. A low neckline will draw attention to a full bust. If necessary, spandex underclothes can help create a slimmer silhouette and visually trim up to ten pounds.

Those who have a slim figure might also have a small bust, which can be made flattering with a black dress in a high neckline or a pushup bra and some jewelry, depending on how conservative the event is and how you feel about showing off your own personal style.

Any woman would look refined and sexy in high heels. Heels stretch the calf muscles and create a curve in the silhouette in the leg. Soft gels can be inserted to make them more comfortable. They also add height and lengthen the figure. Long strands of pearls also draw the eye up vertically for that slim, tall look.

If you have a pear shaped body, you might want a long black dress that trims the thighs and makes the whole body look long and sleek. Chunky silver necklaces are very in right now and bring the eyes up to the neckline. Long silver earrings draw the eyes to a pretty face.

Smokey eye makeup looks refined with any black dress look. Silver and black brings out eyes of all colors. A red lipstick also looks very beautiful with the black dress look. Add a little blush to highlight cheekbones and cheer up the skin-tone.

A little black dress can be worn with a shrug or a cardigan in chilly weather. Neutral colors like grey and light brown look pretty, and white and green or blue add a little pop. Light pink and peach are flattering with pinkish skin-tones, and bring out light hair colors and bright eyes.

Nude high heels are very fashionable and look perfect with black dresses. Black shoes are also an option. Some might opt for bright red heels with a matching red clutch to add a little heat.

If worn right, you can wear your perfect black dress to any event, over and over. It's just a matter of spicing things up to look elegant wherever you go.

3 Essential Beauty Tips for Men

3 Essential Beauty Tips for Men

By David Light

It may sound strange to be discussing beauty tips for men, but men are just as concerned about their appearance as women. However, they may not be aware that there are many helpful ways to enhance the impression they portray to others. This is not only important when enjoying the company of women, but also vital for business and social settings. Here are three essential beauty tips for men that one would be amiss to ignore.

1. Physical Grooming -- The first area that should receive attention is physical grooming. Men often feel that the daily shower and shave process is all the cleansing needed. This is not true. Everyone, men and women alike should pay special attention to good facial cleansing morning and night, including weekly facial masks to cleanse pores to prevent blackheads. This is definitely not an exclusive feminine grooming need. Following thorough cleansing, trim or otherwise remove any wild hairs on the eyebrows, nose and ears. Most barbers perform this trim as part of the regular haircut, but the need will often arise between barber visits.

Concerning the shaving process, another tip is important. Men should either be cleanly shaven or wear a neatly trimmed beard. The stubble look portrays a look of laziness and is no longer fashionable. Experiment with aftershaves and colognes to find the right fragrance for your body chemistry. Men should always smell nice, but the wrong or too strong a fragrance will be offensive.

2. Cosmetics (You Heard Me!) -- The next area of beauty tips for men may be surprising. Most men think that wearing makeup is not even to be considered. However, there are makeup products made especially for men and one of the most popular is called a guyliner, which is regularly used by many celebrities. Using a small amount of dark eye shadow on the eye lids will emphasize your eyes and produce a smoky and sexy look. If you have uneven skin tone on your face, a little foundation can be used to blend away the blotchy look. And keep a tube of lip balm with you at all times to keep your lips moist, especially if you hope a date will end with a goodnight kiss.

3. Context-Driven Style -- No list of tips would be complete without addressing clothing. The most important consideration is the type of occasion for which you will dressing, from an elegant restaurant, a serious business meeting or a movie date. Every man should possess at least one high quality suit, with appropriate shirts and ties. If you are unsure of the right style, enlist the help of knowledgeable staff at a fine clothing shop. Clothing does not have to be expensive, just well fitting and stylish, but the correct clothing is certainly worth the price. When dressing, to help ensure you are wrinkle free, hang your clothing in the bathroom while you shower. The steam will remove any wrinkles.

Incorporating a few of these beauty tips for men into your daily regimen will make you stand out in a positive way and give you the natural confidence that will make you look good as well as feel good.

Best Ottoman Award (a Story of Relaxation and CSN Stores)

On these winter days, I often get home from work feeling tired and ready to kick back. After trudging through the snow, I'm ready to get inside. It's so nice to finally warm up, get dinner started, and relax a bit.

After figuring out what to cook and starting it up on the stove or in the oven, I'll generally make my way to the living room, and plop down on one of our comfy couches. The perfect moment just to be. Not figuring anything out or working on any projects, but just letting go and meditating for a minute.

For a while now, the Hubs and I have been longing for a way not only to sit back but also to put our feet up after a long day. And we got lucky: we scored a sweet ottoman from CSN Stores that goes perfectly in the living room!

I cozy up and immediately feel like this:

Full relaxation achieved! Slippered feet on an ottoman. And one that's attractive and has great storage, too!

See, one of the best parts is that we can stuff our living room cuddle blankets in there, so it keeps the whole room tidier, too. Win-win.

I'd highly recommend checking out CSN Stores if you're in need of a new piece of furniture or decor. They've got a huge selection -- over 200 online stores where you can find everything from wall art to these Herman Miller chairs to cookware. In all my shopping there, I've had great turnaround times on shipping time, too.

CSN Stores, I award you the Best Ottoman Award -- a little footrest that's the perfect size for my living room, that was right in my price range (only about $40!), and that makes relaxation and a tidy apartment that much easier. (FYI it's this one, but in black.)

Now I don't even mind looking out the window to find the snow falling... because I know I can just curl up on the couch and know I am home for the night. :)

World's Largest Hand-Woven Carpet

The world's largest hand-woven carpet 'Qasr al-Alam' has been designed by an Iranian artist on the order of Emir of Oman. The carpet was unveiled in Tehran on July 31, 2010.

It has taken 18 months for Ali Khaliqi to design the carpet and although the patterns do not belong to any specific region of Iran, they are generally traditional patterns, CHN news agency reported.

Khaliqi describes the carpet as a great masterpiece, stating, "It's not only noted for its size but also for its trapezoid shape containing one concave, and one convex side".

The 5,625.15-square-meter carpet will be spread at the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan Mosque in Abu Dhabi, Jalaleddin Bassam added. It took weavers 2 years to make the 2.2-billion-knot carpet, he said.

Ambassadors and envoys of Islamic countries to Iran have also visited the on-going weaving process of the world's largest carpet.

Public Relations Department of Iran's Carpet Company announced that the visit had positive outcomes and that many of the ambassadors had become eager to order carpets.

Iran's Carpet Company has decided to organize public tours to further familiarize people and journalists with this great art.

"There were many countries such as China, India, and Nepal on the list of Emirates nominees for handling the project, but Iran was chosen for its facilities, and experienced weavers," said Hassan Ansari-Nia, the manager of Khorasan Carpet Company in Iran.
