Thursday Gadgets: Four Favorite Electronics Gifts for Your Teen Boy

Four Favorite Electronics Gifts for Your Teen Boy

By Chris Robertson

Teen birthdays and other special occasions can leave you in a quandary when it comes to gift giving. Gone are the days when you knew what your kid wanted for his birthday. These days, your teen is out and about, and more often than not, you're not sure what he wants or needs. To top it all off, you have a sneaking suspicion that the gifts he wants are way outside your budget range. Never fear - small electronics are a surefire hit with teen boys, and the prices have come down incredibly over the past couple of years. Here are four electronics gifts that your teen boy is sure to love.

Gift Idea #1: Feed the Music Urge With an MP3 Player

Yeah, he loves his music-and you're often stuck listening to it. Not too long ago, you'd have to lay out a few hundred dollars for a quality MP3 player, but that's no longer the case. You can pick up an 8GB personal music player that will feed all of his favorite tunes right into his ear so you don't have to share for under $50. If that's still a little pricey, you can go as low as $15 for a 2GB player that will hold up to 200 of his favorite songs.

Gift Idea #2: Up the Ante With an MP4 player

The next step up from an MP3 player is an MP4 player. The main difference between MP3 and MP4 players is that the latter also plays video files, including movies. You can purchase a 4GB MP4 player with a 1.8-inch screen for as little as $50. Your teen boy can load up his favorite movie or a couple of episodes of a much-watched television show to keep him occupied on the bus trip to school.

Gift Idea #3: Give Him Some Roots With a Docking Station for His iPod

Portability is awesome, but sometimes your teen boy will just want to relax at home. A docking station for his MP3 player or iPhone adds speakers to the mix so he can listen to his music in surround sound. The best docking stations also have other fun capabilities, like sleep and alarm functions so he can fall asleep to music and wake up to a fully-charged iPod playing his favorite tunes.

Gift Idea #4: Put Him in the Picture With a Digital Camera

If there's one electronics gift that's always welcome, it's a digital camera that lets him capture his life as it's happening. If you've been holding off on giving your teen a digital camera because you're afraid that he'll lose the costly gift, you can relax. You can pick up a reasonably good digital camera for about $50. It won't compete with a top-of-the-line $500 model, but he'll still have a blast grabbing snaps of his best buds at school or when just hanging around the house.

It's true that teen boys can be difficult to buy for, but it's hard to go wrong when giving them electronics gifts. Now the difficult part will be figuring out which one to give.
