Simplify

Photo via Lululemon. This is one of their talented ambassadors, Meghan.

Hey yogis! How was your weekend? I hope you are back at work feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I am!

I had a lovely weekend with a nice mix of productivity and relaxation. I've got some other creative projects in the works besides the blog, so I decided to a take a couple days off to put some energy toward those. Plus there is nothing like a Sunday at home doing some cooking for the week and having a little candlelit dinner with friends. (I made quiche! Mmmm.)

The Hubs and I also had a little adventure at the local laundromat, plus a delicious sushi lunch across the street at Evanston's Seafood Ranch. We highly recommend it! You can buy fresh sushi and soups, or shop in their little two-aisle Asian grocery. They carry green tea icecream (my fave!), any sauce you can imagine for Asian cuisine, plus sashimi-grade fish for making your own sushi. I'll be back very soon to try that.

Anyway, I hope you had fun and maybe took a little time for yourself this weekend, too. It can be so worth it to have a break -- whether it's from work, or just your computer screen at home. Sometimes a few days off from the Hot Room can do wonders for your practice, too.

Sometime's it's just better to simplify. Do a little less. You may find yourself appreciating that task you chose to take out of your busy schedule, even yoga.

I know I am excited to get back to my mat tonight!

I'm also stoked to spend this week immersed in all of the Yogi Sponsorship 2011 applications. Thanks to all of you who have sent in your apps. We have some very strong candidates!

To those of you who have the app but haven't returned it yet, please do so soon. The deadline is coming up. I'm happy to give you a bit of extra time if you need it, but be sure to communicate before the deadline rather than later.

The choice will be tough. I can't wait to post the news! Stay tuned.

Winter Yoga, Wing Night & The Greatest Feeling

A crowded class reminds you to find your private practice. Photo via Coffee and Yoga.

Class was super crowded last night at the studio. Lots of beginners around. Looks like a lot of New Year's resolutions have been set!

The mats were lined up in neat rows, lots of yogis packed into the room. All the commotion and bustle really pumped me up. I warmed up with big smiles, and energy coursing through me. I love a good crowded class.

Breathe together, move together. That's the yoga. Photo via Lululemon's Flickr photostream.

What's funny is I arrived there with my good friend Lindsay, who's a Bikram teacher and massage therapist at the studio, and we both entered the Hot Room separately to set up our mats. Little did I know, I had plopped my stuff down right next to hers!

The close quarters made for an inspiring class. Linds is a super yogi and having her next to me during the postures gave me the motivation to push a little harder, focus a little stronger, and let go of the crazy energy from the beginners in the room.

That's Lindsay at her Teacher Training in Acapulco. She is an incredible yogi!

Being close to other yogis in the room also brought my thoughts to Teacher Training. I seriously can't wait to be there!

On some days it feels like I've got a lot of preparing to do before I go. I want to have at least the first four  postures down before Training, plus I could really use a challenge or two before I kill myself for 90 minutes... twice a day, for three months! Ha.

On other days, though, I feel ready to pack up a little suitcase and get my ass to the Big Tent right away. I've got my wardrobe of tiny shorts and sports bras, my set of yoga mats, my Bengal tiger strength and English Bulldog determination. I've got my open mind and willingness to let go. I'm ready, right?

And especially after crowded classes like last night's, I just can't help but imagine the energy in the room with Bikram up front and a bunch of advanced, eager trainees lining the floor from wall to wall. It has to be electric!

Standing Bow next to Standing Bow. Gotta love a crowded class! Photo via Lululemon's Flickr photostream.

Regardless of when I get to Training, I am very grateful to know that it is a goal I will turn to reality. It's not a "new year's resolution." It's a life goal. It will happen... "eventually or in the future." (And for those who are curious, it's looking like Fall 2011 is going to be my time, but nothing is set yet. I will keep you posted for sure!)

After class was super fun, too. The Hubs, the Professional Best Man, and I have a tradition of enjoying all-you-can-eat wings at Merle's Barbecue in Evanston on Wednesday nights. I mean, how can you pass up high-quality wings at only $4.50?! Plus, they have just about the tastiest lemonade around town.

Delicious wings and great company made for a lovely Wednesday wing night!

It was super busy at Merle's last night, so we sort of made an evening of it. I was so happy and content as we sat munching chips and guac and discussing our favorite types of dogs and where we want to live when we grow up.

In both the hot room and at the restaurant, I felt surrounded by love and friends. A sense of community inspires me. There seemed to be a living pulse in the air. It really energized me!

I can't wait to get back to class -- both at Bikram Yoga Evanston and other studios in the area. One of my goals this year is to expand my practice into new forms. I am hoping to buy a few DVDs for at-home practice (to meet my budget), as well as review some local studios on the blog (and hopefully score a few free classes here and there). There are plenty of cheap or free community classes as well!

The greatest feeling of all is to be surrounded by your fellow yogis as you work through class.

The surrender, the energy, the love in the room: it's overwhelming and wonderful. All at once. All together. All you need: your yoga!

Beards, Adventures and Chocolate

Just found this video via Honest Fare, one of my favorite food bloggers, and had to share. These guys could totally pass for pirates as well as chocolate makers! Plus, the Mast Brothers have a masculine strength and fascinating intellect that fits perfectly with the new Real Men Do Yoga series, I say.

Their story is beautiful, their beards impressive, and their philosophy spot-on. As one brother says, "Everything roots back to our love affair with the spirit of craft." From their chocolates to the papers that wrap them, to their restored printing press and the sailboats that carry their cocoa beans, the brothers are inspired by the handcrafted items that surround them.

Super cool chocolate makers. Photo from The Mast Brothers Facebook page.

Even more awesome: they aren't looking to produce anything en mass. It's all intricate, detailed, original. As they say, "We're looking for an inconsistent product so your taste buds are not only enjoying the sensuality of (the chocolate), but they're also learning." Every bar is its own little joy!

Chocolate with the adventurousness of a Mark Twain story. Chocolate made with adventure, curiosity, and spirit. I love it!

Check out their Brooklyn chocolate shop, their Facebook, and their sweet blog. Hope you get a bar in your stocking!

Bikram Yoga Minneapolis on Black Friday

It was snowy out on Black Friday, so the heat felt great!
I'm way overdue to post about my adventure to Bikram Yoga Minneapolis during Thanksgiving weekend, but I'm excited to share about my visit to the studio. Also keep an eye out for several Minneapolis-themed giveaways today.

Instead of getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of Black Friday shopping, my cousin, a friend, and I toughed it out in the Torture Chamber. We were workin' off all that food from our family feast.

Last Friday I brought my cousin Joelle and her friend Matt to Bikram Yoga Minneapolis for an intense first class. Even I was surprised by how humid it was in there!

Joelle and Matt are Bikram badasses.
Minneapolis' studio is a beautiful space with artsy details, cool lounge chairs, and colorful decor. The hot room was a little cozy but we fit quite a few yogis among the two rows.

Here's the studio space.
My only wish was for a new carpet. That Minnesota humidity can make things a little stinky! But that breeze at the end of class? Heavenly.

Loved the decor.
Our teacher Lori led with energy and spirit as she delivered a crystal-clear dialogue. My favorite was the way she pronounced "squeeeeeze" during Eagle as though she was wringing out a towel with her words. It definitely motivated me to wrap my legs tighter and sit deeper into second set!

I was super proud of Joelle and Matt for getting through class and performing some impressive postures. They are natural Bikram yogis, that's for sure! Both said they felt a little lightheaded at times and thought they might pass out, but they made it :) Whew!

No guns allowed... except those sexy biceps you bring to class!
After our showers and a refreshing Zico Lima Citron, we chatted it up with locals at the studio, Lori, and the studio owner, Martha. I realized that these ladies run a tight ship at Bikram Yoga Minneapolis and truly have a deep passion for the yoga, for teaching it the right way, and for sharing it with others.

When I handed her one of my business cards, Lori immediately mentioned her love for the phrase "at home in the hot room" on the card.
The cards that help me yogavangelize!
"That's one of the best parts about this yoga," she said. "Anywhere you practice Bikram, you bring a little bit of your home with you."

I couldn't agree more, and I felt right at home at the Minneapolis studio. Hope to be back soon to take class again and teach one day! Namaste, Minnesota yogis.
Our lovely teacher, Lori.
Here are a few words from Joelle's reflections on her first Bikram class. Great job, cuz!
As I stand, the sweat is everywhere: pouring off my arms, running down my legs, dripping down my face and nose, and turning my stomach into a shinny, glossy pool. The towel underneath my feet is soaked.

I’m almost out of water. My head starts to slightly spin as I go into the next pose and hold it for what seems like five minutes. Pretty sure if was only about 30 seconds, though.

A gush of cold hair whooshes down from the ceiling and hits my face. I breathe it in, close my eyes and exhale a very long, happy exhale. Time for a shower. It’s not until after my shower that I realize how incredibly loose, free-minded, and amazing I feel.

After class, a clear mind hit, a sensation of refreshing wonderfulness, no back pain, muscles all stretched out. It felt amazing. Bikram yoga. Mmmm!

Some of the awesome details in the studio: a note about how to lock the knee, and a stunning print of a pregnant yogi.
Thanks again, Martha and Lori and the Bikram Yoga Minneapolis team, and to Joelle and Matt for rockin' their first class.

Free Week at Yoga in Oak Park, Chicago

Photo via RisePro on Flickr.

"I will be calmly active, actively calm. I am a prince of peace, sitting on the throne of poise, directing the kingdom of my activity."
-Paramahansa Yogananda

When I heard that my yogi friend/teacher Nancy was going to be opening a studio in the Chicago area, I smiled. But then my heart jumped a bit: wait, this meant she wouldn't be around to teach in Evanston!

Although we miss you lots at BYE, Nancy, we are so, so proud of you and excited for your amazing opening of 105 Yoga studio in Oak Park.

Nancy's approach to yoga is a lot like Paramahansa Yogananda's idea of being "actively calm." In her classes, you feel incredibly energized and yet your mind is peaceful and clear, as though you were practicing on the beach at sunrise. Her approach to running the studio is equally as balanced: she offers a wide variety of classes every day, is featuring a Grand Opening this weekend, and will continue to treat yogis throughout the month of December.

To celebrate the holidays, 105 Yoga is offering incredible rewards to all yogis each time they practice December. For every class, you are entered in a drawing to win:

Bikram Yoga & Spirituality

Note: this post has updates as of 11/22 and is meant to act as an ongoing conversation. There will be follow up posts to come. Thanks for reading, and please feel free to share your thoughts below!
----
I gave my heart to God long before Hubs and I were married, but the entire premarital counseling commitment + the incredible spiritual experience of making a lifelong promise on our wedding day renewed my sense of God's everlasting grace. Standing under the trees that day, I was reminded of His eternal presence in the world. I find it interesting that this life-changing process paralleled the start to my Bikram practice. Here's a short reflection on how the two continue to inform each other, and provide me a beautiful life.

During class today my teacher Stuart said something I loved:

"What, are you having a spiritual moment right now? OK, save that for after class. Right around, right around to savasana."

We were only three postures away from being done and everyone seemed a little sluggish, so Stuart made an effort to focus solely on getting us in and out of the postures. In his compassionate yet firm voice, he pushed us to move faster. "Get to relaxation. Let's go, right around." Stu spoke in the same tone that I've heard teachers use to tell students to put down their water ("You can take a shower after class!"), to stay with the dialogue ("No speedy Gonzalez! I didn't say anything about a backbend. No backbends!"), or to stop freaking out ("You've got this, guys. It's just yoga!").

A voice that means business, that demands. A voice that a teacher has earned, and should use to keep control of the class.

I found Stuart's no-nonsense approach hilarious. Like any other posture correction, he just pointed to a student who seemed zen-d out, told them to focus, and brought their attention back to the room. I imagine that in other types of yoga, a teacher might encourage students to embrace a spiritual moment, to detach from the present, or even to invite the experience of intense emotion, if that's what the yoga brought during class.

But this is what I love about Bikram -- when you come to class, you leave that stuff at the door. You get to business. You do the postures. If you can, you must.

Stuart also reminded us, "Choose not to suffer. If you're in here and you're lonely, or frustrated, or angry -- that's you. We're not sellin' that in here."

It's so true: Bikram yoga is about doing the yoga, and breathing through it when it gets tough.

It's not about moping, or feeling sorry for ourselves, or dwelling on our emotions or life situations outside the studio.

In Bikram yoga, we meditate. We focus. We grow stronger.

There is one option: do the yoga. Follow the dialogue. Do the best you can.

I wouldn't even consider 'Namaste' a prayer, but it is the one somewhat-spiritual ritual we practice in Bikram. While I pray regularly in my own life, my 90 minute class is a time where I allow myself to fully relax, clear my mind, and connect with my body.

Since I started practicing yoga, I've thought a lot about the ways it connects to my spirituality and my Christian beliefs. For me, the two are hugely separate, but each inform each other.

My yoga practice allows me to quiet my mind quickly, to silence self-doubt and anger, to meet goals I never imagined I was capable of meeting. My Christianity allows me to connect fully with God, to live by His grace, and to give love and forgiveness to others that I would otherwise be incapable of giving.

Together, these two practices help me to love my life, my body, and others in the same way that I know I am loved by God.

In Jeremiah 29:11, God reassures us, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

There are a lot of moments in our lives when we find it hard to believe this. About a year ago, as I was going through the three hardest months I've ever been through, I struggled to accept this idea. But it's so hard now, I thought. How will things ever be better? I had a hard time thinking I'd ever feel completely happy again, much less thinking I'd easily be able to get through a day without tears.

What heights of love, what depths of peace. I now know a joyful balance, an insane love within marriage, a happiness unlike any other year of my life.

I look at where I am now and I believe with every fiber of my heart that I have been living according to God's plan for my life all along. Looking back, I understand that experiencing distress and anxiety allowed me to discern where it was coming from, how I could change my habits, and how I could choose to see the world around me.

I became thankful for the pain, and trusting that it would not last forever.

In the yoga, this can happen on a micro level throughout class. On the hard days, we start pranayama breathing wondering how we'll make it through when we feel lightheaded and uncomfortable within minutes and we haven't even done an asana yet.

Standing Head to Knee. We wonder: how will I someday be able to hold up my leg for a full 60 seconds if today I can hardly balance on one leg?

Fixed Firm. Will my hips and ankles ever open up? I've been sitting on the floor for months, watching yogis around me arch their lower backs like bridges, their arms over their heads and their breathing slow... and my flexibility hasn't changed. How can I believe there's a future for me in this posture?

Again and again, we hesitate. We question ourselves, our capabilities. We feel apprehensive -- or simply apathetic-- about embracing change, or giving it the right amount of time to take place.

And then, all of a sudden, we learn the real yoga, and we let go.

We get out of our own way.

We trust.

And our practice, and our lives, are completely changed.

We get happy, like newlyweds embarking on the rest of their lives together.

As Bikram likes to say, "Tell them to come to firm their ass! In six months, their whole lives have changed."

Whether we come to yoga to practice determination, flexibility or a spiritual connection to the world around us, we will be changed by it as soon as we let go.

Here are a few verses to turn to if you're experiencing difficulty with accepting change in your life:

From Deuteronomy 31:8: “It is the Lord who goes before you.”

John 14:1–3: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

Isaiah 43:18–21: “See, I am doing a new thing.”

We can do all things through Him!

Spiritual moments encouraged, but just not during Bikram class. Do the postures, people!

As soon as we choose not to suffer, the whole world is ours.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about spirituality and yoga. Please leave a comment below!

A Great Find for Hydration & Summer Smoothies: Ultima Replenisher

The start of a new series:
Letting Out the Domestic (New Apartment Life)

Summer is on the way out. The nights are turning cooler, the breezes ushering in fall, and the autumn sweaters being broken out of closets for some cuddly & cozy fun. It's that time: your last chance for a tasty summertime fruit smoothie!

I got excited last night because I realized it was time not only to make use of my lovely blender in the new kitchen but also to finally post a review of a great new product I've been using lately:

Ultima Replenisher, a hydrating supplement that's great for Bikram yogis. Thirsty after class? Thirsty before class? Throw a packet of this fruity-flavored and easy-to-mix powder into your water bottle or morning blender mix, and you're set to go. Electrolytes recharged. Sugars avoided. Health improved!

All summer, I've been whipping up creamy, delicious and healthy smoothies using fresh fruit, juice, and half-frozen yogurt. Nothing fancy here, but that's what makes the simple texture and taste so pure and enjoyable. This time, I threw in the orange-flavored packet of Ultima, some frozen bananas, peaches, strawberries, vanilla yogurt, orange juice, milk... and (don't judge) a few scoops of vanilla ice cream! Whoops, so much for no sugar :)

The results were delicious, as you can see from my big smile. Now normally, I would not add the ice cream due to its sugar and fat content and the fact that those scoops are just going to weigh you down if you're about to head to class. Note: not recommended! I would not recommend drinking a smoothie even an hour or two before Bikram, actually. But, the morning before your evening class? Perfect. This gives your body ample time to absorb all the great stuff you include in the drink.

Which brings me back to Ultima Replenisher's line of well-crafted, health-minded products. I was given a promotional pack of all four flavors (grape, orange, raspberry, and lemonade) to try out, and I have to say I was pretty pleased with the results.

The powder mixes easily and tastes pretty good (there's a little hint of the vitamin-y aftertaste, but it really reminds me of EmergenC, which I love mixed with a little fruit juice and poured over ice). When you add it to a smoothie, you're not even going to notice that you've added a supplement! Who can beat that?

The other awesome reason to try it: apparently Ultima is the only 100% natural, non-GMO, gluten-, sugar- and dye-free electrolyte beverage on the market. You can find it easily in most Whole Foods stores or visit the company's website at www.ultimareplenisher.com.

I can't say I'm not still a huge advocate for coconut water products (VitaCoco is my fave, followed closely by Zico's line), but I'm definitely newly convinced of the benefit of having a supplement on hand.

Do you drink electrolyte-boosting drinks before or after yoga? What are your favorites? I'd love to hear your thoughts and definitely add to this post if you've tried Ultima Replenisher. If not, I'd recommend ordering or picking up a box or two to try and to gift to your yogi friends at your home studio. Stay hydrated!

And make some smoothies before it's too cold out to enjoy them, friends! Get ready for some warm & cozy soup coming up next time in the series -- a guest post from another talented yogini blogger. Until next time!
