Advice Needed on Full Camel

Photo via Benitasana, the awesome website of a yoga teacher.

Morning, all! So I just saw an awesome article about having a yoga pose-off in the park on Yogapedia that got me thinking about Full Camel.

Full Camel is a pose I think I will be able to pull off "eventually or in the future" (ha, Bikram dialogue moment!)... but I still have qualms about how to get into it. Anyone have suggestions?

How do you get from regular camel pose to full camel pose? Anyone know of any special stretches or backbend suggestions for improving flexibility in the low back to get into that more intense version of camel?

I'd love your suggestions, especially Bikram teacher readers out there. Thanks!

How do I get from the above photo to the one below? Camel pose. For the win!

Update: Check out Joslyn's guide to getting into the posture on Miss Fit Bliss. Totally going to try that! I'll let you know how it goes...

Yogi Tattoos: Got One?

Photos via the Bikram Women's Retreat on Facebook.

Hey yogis! Happy Thursday. Hope you're having a rockin' end to the week.

Are you practicing your yoga? I'm excited: I'm heading to a class tonight at Grateful Yoga of Evanston, a local studio I love. Nick and Lela, the owners and head teachers there, are amazing people. So full of heart! I'll be posting about them again soon.

Plus, tomorrow I'm going to be teaching a little mini yoga class at Northwestern's huge philanthropy event Dance Marathon. I'll be leading the group's highest fundraising individuals (probably around 20-30 undergrads) in a short flow class. It should be fun to incorporate the most invigorating postures so they don't fall asleep on me! During the event they dance for 30 hours straight, and the class is being held about half way through... so I'll be making it as engaging and fun as possible. No savasanas :)

It should be a fun and yoga-filled end to the week. Where are you practicing?

And are you sporting a sweet tattoo at your yoga studio? Lately I've been a little obsessed with them.

I'm also planning a blog post featuring yogis I know with awesome body art. Want to be included? Send me an email with an image of your tattoo! (You can reach me at aliveinthefire at gmail dot com.) You can also leave a comment below and I'll follow up with you.

Hope to hear from you (and see your sick tatts) soon, yogis!

PS Check out Teeg's awesome response to this post. Namaste.

Swimspot: Sexy Yoga Wear for Your Yoga Practice

Hey all! So I've been meaning to post for a while about this awesome hot yoga outfit I scored from Swimspot. Swimspot features fantastic swim wear which you can totally wear for a Bikram class.

It's the best! Comfy, sexy, lightweight, and totally durable enough to hold up in the hot yoga room. I highly recommend the "Next" line by Athena.

I did a little at-home yoga tonight. Couldn't stop smiling because I felt great in the new outfit. It made for a great balance between Bikram poses and some sun salutations. Nothing like a little DownDog after a long day at work to get your body relaxed and happy! It was a nice mix of standing postures and backbends in the spine strengthening series.

And not that I would usually bring attention to them, but I have to say: my tatas looked pretty great in the underwire bra! (Note: I was inspired to mention this solely because I've been reading this blog. Normally I wouldn't feel so comfortable mentioning "the girls" haha! But Gina is seriously one of the most honest and heartfelt fitness bloggers I've found. And I have to agree with her: I don't generally work out with my chest hanging out, like on Body Rock. But after wearing this sexy outfit at home, I'd totally rock it in the Hot Room!)

Are you ready to feel like a supermodel, even if you're not a size small?

Want to rock your Bikram practice with an outfit that sexy and flattering?

Check out SwimSpot. You'll feel awesome!

PS Totally unrelated, but I just won a case of VitaCoco coconut water! I'm super excited to try the Passion Fruit flavor. Keep up to date on VitaCoco's Facebook page and you can win, too. Stay hydrated, yogis!

Great Yoga Giveaway For the Workshop Participants

Friday night I had a great time teaching a little yoga workshop at Northwestern, mostly with newbie yogis. We had a lot of fun trying out the warm up postures from Bikram, meeting each other and sharing what our favorite poses are, and then finishing up class with some great relaxation.

It was beautiful!

Class proved especially helpful because I left with a calm and clear state of mind... only to find a circus of car troubles at home! The Hubs and our friend Nick had suffered a bad jump to the trusty Subaru, so we were racing around trying to decide if we should cab it over to AutoZone, try for a ride, or get another jump. Turns out we have amazing neighbors and we ended up being saved by the lady who's parking spot we stole for a few minutes. She was so kind-hearted and didn't call the tow truck on us, thank goodness!

Anyway, I wanted to offer a sweet little yoga giveaway to all those lovely yogis I met on Friday. If you guys follow the blog, follow me on Twitter, and post a comment below with your contact info, you'll be entered to win:
  • An incredible Bandha Yoga anatomy book (wonderful reading before you get started on a safe practice and a great way to protect all your muscles and joints!)
  • A copy of Julie Rader's meditation (featuring yoga nidra, which is a 45-minute meditation that makes you feel like you've slept for hours)
  • A copy of Maya Fiennes' Kundalini yoga class for detoxing and de-stressing
  • An introduction to your first Bikram class with me! I'll give you helpful tips before class, treat you to a revitalizing VitaCoco coconut water after class, and take you out for coffee afterward to discuss your experience. Doesn't get any better than that!

Again, to win please:
  • leave a comment below with your name and email
  • click "Follow" on the blog
  • add me on Twitter!
Thanks and namaste. *Note: you must be a workshop participant from Friday's class to enter.

Real Men Do Yoga: Jacob Stickney

Jacob Stickney is a Bikram yogi who practices regularly at Bikram Yoga Seattle (Fremont). This is his story.

Fruits of Intensity

"1...2...3...4...5...6..." The teacher speaks loudly so everyone in class can hear, counting out the breaths.

Beginners to experienced, yogis stand near each other on their mats and towels, facing the mirrored wall.

I collapse my shoulders to my sides; legs, feet, and ankles locked together as instructed. It is only the start of the second set of the Pranayama series, the standing deep breathing exercise that sets the tonality for the 26 postures to follow.

My entire body is already drenched with sweat...not even five minutes into the class. I engage fully in the second set with my inhale and exhale, the closure and expansion of the shoulders executed as fully as possible.

When the warm-up postures are complete, I take a few sips of water from my Nalgene bottle and maintain a calmness, letting short bursts of air release through my nostrils. As I look around, I notice I'm one of the youngest students in the room.

Photo courtesy of Jacob Stickney via Darrah Parker Photography.

The room is 105º (40º C) at roughly 40% humidity, men wearing only shorts, women often in clothing that often does not leave much for the imagination. There's an overwhelming amount of sweat in the room. 26 postures, 2 breathing exercises to open and close the class. A 90 minute meditation.

Bikram never gets easy, even for the more experienced practitioners. I am by no means steeped with experience, I have just been fortunate to have excellent instructors thus far and have enthusiastically thrown myself into the fire so to speak.

Even the instructors who have been practicing and teaching for years get slaughtered by the simple yet vigorously intense curriculum that is the Bikram trademark. And yet we all love it, and the yoga feels wonderful.

Bikram yoga has sparked some controversy as it is a yogic practice rooted in the cultural purity of India but brought to American culture. Some say that Bikram yoga is a cult. I don't know about that, but I do know that the 26-posture series incorporates only a tiny fraction of the number of yoga postures that have been developed over thousands of years.

Bikram Choudhury devised a specific and fairly punctual method for exhaustively working the entire body of muscles, systems, and organs. The order of the postures in the sequence is quite intentional: each posture serves a purpose, and is a reaction to its neighboring postures, so that the intensity of each posture is maximized. The entire series is a specific method used to get specific results.

Bikram yoga is an opportunity to become immersed in the marriage of thriving intensity and cultural expansiveness. It's a practice in which the teachers are always students. Including it into my life and surrendering to its intensity is nothing short of life-changing on various levels. I hope to sustain the practice until my heart tells me otherwise.

Thanks for reading.
In joy,
Jacob

Bandha Bandha!

Illustration from Bandha Yoga. Click the image to learn more about these awesome books!

If you're following the blog, you've seen my latest posts about these awesome Bandha Yoga books. Check out this awesome illustration indicating the way yoga helps you find great alignment and balanced energy in your chakras. Pretty beautiful, huh?

If you click on the image above or the ones below, you can learn more about the books and even place an order for one of your own.

I spent a couple hours browsing through pages and reading about how my muscles work together during different postures. I was amazed at how much there is to learn beyond the experience of the yoga! Even after we've felt our bodies in the postures, or heard from instructors about the best and safest way to do Triangle or Eagle, we still have lots we can learn from these books. Check 'em out!

PS I'll be bringing my copy over to Bikram Yoga Evanston soon, so if you're local, keep your eyes peeled for a copy sitting with all of Stu's other yoga books in the lobby. Enjoy!

Soap Heaven

Photo via Lauren Ross Photography.
Photo via Glen Allsop Photography.

Sometimes we need a space for escaping. A spot to relax, unwind, create, imagine. A space simply to be.

You can create such a space in your home with the right mindset, a nice candle or two, and a lovely spa in your very own bathroom.

I highly suggest soaps and dead sea salts from Sharilynn Studios on Etsy to do the trick. Shari creates dreamy handmade products that are awesome for daily use as well as for special at-home spa days.

My husband and I have been enjoying her well-crafted, gentle, and lovely-smelling soaps for a couple of weeks now and we both love them. I also love knowing that they're made from all-natural, healthy ingredients that are great for my skin. Plus, she's got a great variety of scents that aren't overly feminine or masculine, so they are great for anyone.

Our favorites so far are the eucalyptus spearmint zen and the coconut lime verbena flavors. Amazing!

A few of Shari's amazing soap and dead sea salt products I've been trying. Love them!

On days when I feel tired or a little stressed, a bath featuring her amazing sea salts helps immensely. I can finally warm up, let go, and enjoy a good steamy bath with no distractions, no conversations, and no negative thoughts in my mind.

Sharilynn Studios also has awesome back scrubbers and pumice stones for sale, so you can get that little extra "oomph" in your cleaning routine.

I also love that Shari's site features artwork and art supplies for sale. She is a talented artist with an inspired, insightful eye for beauty. Swing by her Etsy shop to find out more-- and tell her I sent you :)  You won't be disappointed!

And believe me, when that lovely box shows up on your doorstep with goodies inside (like it did for me), you'll be on your way to luxe and joyful goodness!

Yoga Tonight

Photo via Coffee and Yoga.

Sometimes I get what I like to call the 4 o'clock waver. I'm sitting at work, less than an hour left 'til I get to peace out. I'm planning to hit up the Hot Room for a sweaty Bikram yoga session, but then... I waver.

What about a lazy night at home?

A date with the Hubs?

What about baking cookies in my PJs?

All of a sudden my mind's bouncing around about how hard the Standing Balancing series is going to be, about how I'm under-hydrated or hungry. Surely there's something more relaxing I can do tonight than yoga

It's sad, really. Frustrating. These silly thoughts!

Yoga is my relaxation. Yoga is my meditation. Yoga kicks my ass so I can let go -- fully, finally. Especially on the days when I waver, yoga is what I really need.

And let's be honest: if you can, YOU MUST!

See you at the 5:30pm class, yogis :) Here's to kicking yourself in the bum so you can get your yoga in today.

Today's post is the latest in the Beyond Childhood series, which features conversation about living love, putting your family first, and how to enjoy marriage and parenthood.

Photo (and all photos below) from the Little Sapling Toys shop.

Today I bring you Little Sapling Toys, a lovely Etsy site with all natural and safe infant and toddler toys.

Shop owners Nick and Kimber would like to offer 10% off any order to all Alive in the Fire readers. Use the coupon code ALIVE10 when checking out (valid until February 14th).

More about the shop:
We all have a hand in design, production, business, or packaging in some way. During those necessary breaks we play hide and seek, eat, bike or jog. On Sundays we go to church, eat and play games together.

Toys: We brought life to the classic wooden teether by offering the widest selection of shapes available. We have designed and produced a solid selection of organic developmental toys and blocks. Our newest endeavor is the land of personalization with Blue, our laser engraver.

Our Philosophy: Here at LST, we are committed to quality toys and a healthy earth. We plant a tree for every toy sold, use FSC Certified hardwoods, recycled content packaging and participate in our local green power program.

Each toy is handmade in our workshop (which is in transition right now between Boise, Utah and Minnesota). We design our toys to help young children develop creativity, pattern recognition and fine motor skills. However, the most important toy any child can have is his or her caregiver. For this reason, our educational toys are most effective with interactive play.

Read more on Little Sapling Toys and keep up with their sales and giveaways on their Facebook page or their main site.

Get shoppin' for your little ones!
Check out this adorable stacking toy. And what a cute picture!

Little Sapling Toys makes a ton of cute teethers, like this guitar.

Or an airplane, if your little guy loves things that go.

Seriously, About that Party

Photos via This is Glam and their offshoot fashion blog.

Hey readers, remember awhile ago when I mentioned I'd love to throw a big happy blog party when we hit 100 followers? Well, we're getting close :)

Here's a thought: what if all of you sent this link to a couple friends on Facebook today? And asked that each of them send the blog along to one or two people they thought might enjoy it, or who could use a little motivation for getting back to their mat?

Photo via FYeahYoga.

My invitation to you: invite your friends, build up the blog following to 100, and then let's part-ay! No, really. Seriously!

We'll all dress up in glittery, sequin-y outfits after yoga class and go out on the town for fancy coffee drinks. Or do whatever else you want. :)

How Happy is Your Yoga Bum?

Photo of K.Deer Model via her site. These are the beautiful bumbums I've been loving lately!

A couple days ago another Bikram blogger, The Dancing J over at Keep it Locking, posted about the crazy costumes we wear to yoga class.

I loved her reflections on how appearance can make us feel more ready for our practice, whether we are a student or a teacher.

And she notes that the dialogue even refers to "costumes." She says:

It happens a couple of times. ("Heel touching the costume, sole of the foot facing the ceiling.") It’s an apt description. We do put on costumes to do yoga.  Everyone has at least one article of clothing - a favorite tank top or pair of shorts - that is For Yoga. And when you put that clothing on, you are in your yoga costume, looking like a yogi, ready to try to do some yoga.

Isn't it interesting how a fun pair of shorts or a low-cut bra, or a big t-shirt, or no t-shirt at all can affect the way you think of yourself at yoga?

I definitely have my favorite outfits. Most recently, I've added a pair of "bum bum" shorts from K. Deer's haute yoga wear line. I love them!

Photo of K.Deer Model via her site.

Photo of the entire K.Deer line via her site. Look at that awesome selection!

Kristine's line is fantastic -- lots of wild colors and prints, and most everything can be ordered in matching sets of headbands and shorts. The fabric she uses is super flexible and doesn't slip (so you can rest assured that your bum won't be hanging out during the postures... and that's nice, because you've got enough to worry about in yoga anyway!).

Check out her main website, which links to her Etsy shop. So many fun pairs of shorts to choose from!

And all of these look and feel (and perform) like true Bikram outfits, the ones you see being worn by advanced and stylish students.

Me, I just got lucky, because my friend Jenn at Yoga With Style told me about them! You can shop there for K.Deer's stuff, too.
Heads up to TruHarmony (Chicago) and Bikram Yoga Evanston readers: I'll be posting some awesome flyers in the locker rooms in the next week or so. They feature coupons so you can place an order for a discount! Woohoo!

I encourage all readers to check out K. Deer's awesome stuff, and let me know if you have questions or feedback.

Here's to happy yoga bums!
