Back to the Windy City

It's blizzardy here in Chicago, but we're glad to be back.

We made it home! It is wonderful to be back to Evanston even will all the crazy weather. Hubs and I actually marveled at the way we felt excited to see the snowflakes this morning :)

From the sunny beaches to freezing weather, I've been having a blast documenting my Standing Bow since Thanksgiving. It's getting there... :)

On the beach, baby. See that little island out there? We swam to it.

Sunset in Minnesota.

Nothing beats yoga on the beach but I can't wait to hit the Hot Room soon. Coming up, I'll be posting about several outstanding studios, including the one in Minneapolis I visited over Thanksgiving and the one in Granite Bay, CA where I first practiced Bikram with my mom.

Ooooh, backbend!
Even in the frosty weather, we'll be dreaming of Puerto Rico and remembering all the fun times we had drinking pina coladas, kayaking the bay, exploring the private island, and even building a sandcastle!

Our favorite drink in Puerto Rico: the pina colada of course!

Keep your eyes out for more Christmas-y and New Year's posts here on Alive in the Fire as the month goes along. Tomorrow I'll be featuring a sexy party top and a beautiful painting you won't want to miss!

Our Christmas tree!

Snuggle up out there, yogis. Namaste!

Practicing with Pain

Photo via cognitive.distortion on Flickr.

Recently I received an email from a reader who was wondering about how to do Bikram yoga while dealing with back and neck pain. Since I can totally relate, I thought I'd share a little post about recommendations from some of my teachers, plus a bit from The Boss himself!

Here are some basic tips to keep in mind:
  • Always speak with a teacher in person for the best advice. Don't be scared to ask; instructors are there to help! Be specific about your pain and be honest about prior injury, too.
  • Only practice with a certified Bikram instructor and always consult your doctor if you are unsure whether you should be practicing.
  • Be careful, move slowly, and stop if you experience sharp pain. Don't hurt yourself by going too far just because you see yogis around you advancing in the posture.
  • The right way is the hard way!
  • Lengthen the spine before bending it.
  • Follow the dialogue! Listen for steps and be sure to do them in the right order. For example, in Padahastasana you bring your upper body to the thighs before you lock the knees. In Separate Leg Stretching, you empty the stomach and suck it in before you stretch.

From Stuart, studio director at Bikram Yoga Evanston:
Try the right way and do the best you can.  It may be uncomfortable and that's OK.

From Nancy at 105 Yoga in Oak Park, Chicago:
It's hard to assess pain for a person I haven't seen or talked to. Your best bet is to talk to your teacher in person and tell them exactly where you feel pain.

Sometimes you get a stiff neck from sleeping wrong or tweaking it somehow, in which case, Pranayama is awesome.  It will hurt and be uncomfortable but it should feel better after the breathing and definitely after class.  If this is something that is bothering you every time you do Pranayama, you might be doing it wrong.  If you've just started practicing, you might not be used to moving your head and neck that way.  If you've been practicing for a while, you might be doing it wrong.
With all of the above said, if it's painful, definitely back off a bit.  But I would really encourage you to speak with your teachers about any pain and in order to make sure you're doing postures the right way.

From Lindsay at Bikram Yoga Evanston
who's also a massage therapist and owner of Omai Bodyworks:
What to do when you're experiencing discomfort depends on the quality of pain, and if you have any previous injuries. If you have some sort of osteo-arthritis or disk degeneration I would say to only go back in backbends and Pranayama to the point of pain (or keep your head upright if you can't move it backwards at all).

If there's no previous stuff going on, my recommendation would be to try to focus on lengthening up before tilting the head back in Pranayama. A lot of people just drop the head back, which crunches the vertebrae, and it's important to never do that (in any posture). It is all about lengthening first, and then moving.

Also, make sure the shoulders are relaxed away from the ears, as hunching the shoulders puts a lot of undue stress on the neck/shoulder/upper back region. If you are able to move the head backwards, even a little bit, you should focus on really squeezing the elbows together in front of the body (to increase the space between her shoulderblades on the backside of the body).

Especially when you first start doing the yoga, the body hurts as it is opening and adjusting to the postures. The body will follow the path of least resistance, and a lot of these movements are completely foreign to a lot of people, so it can be painful in the beginning... The body will fight initially. But the right way is the hard way :)

From Bikram Choudhury and the Bikram Yoga site:

Beginning with Half Moon, my series of exercises is designed to make your shocked and shriveled spine work to both sides, to the back, and then to the front. Only by exercising in all directions can your spine be healthy; and only with a healthy spine can you have a healthy nervous system.

If your chronic problem is something such as sciatic pain, lumbago, sore back muscles, whiplash, vertebrae out of line, shoulder trouble, radiating pains down the arms, tension headaches, swayback, spinal curvature, pinched nerves, or "something not quite right that the doctor said I ought to watch," stop watching. Act! Get to work on these exercises. Even those who have had spinal surgery should get to work--with their doctor's okay and a qualified teacher who can lead them in my particular series of exercises.

People with slipped disc are often in such pain that Yoga seems further torture. However, in numerous slipped disc cases, determined yoga can save the day. So endure the pain. But please note that those with slipped disc should also work under the supervision of a qualified instructor using my exact series of exercises and the safety rules laid down in the dialogue, in my book, and on my website.

Please follow the instructions carefully when you are doing forward bends. For example, in the half moon (Padahastasana series), the instructions are to bring your torso on your thighs, chest to the knees, no light space anywhere between the torso and the thighs. If you try to straighten your legs without having this first part accomplished, you can create pain in your lower back. Also keep in mind the instruction "360 degrees stretching." What that means is to make the stretch even throughout the whole back side of the body.

You also want to follow these guidelines in separate leg stretching. Bikram says, "Suck in your stomach and bend your upper body down from your lower spine  towards the floor." It is difficult to suck in your stomach unless you exhale, so make sure to exhale as you fold forward. When you suck in your stomach, it supports the whole pelvis to roll forwards with the rest of your spine--this eliminates strain in the lower back.

Working carefully, mindfully, allowing your breath to flow with your movement will help you to gradually deepen your experience of the postures.

Find Your Peace

All photos are frames taken  from the film. Wondrous!

I just discovered this amazing video via YogaDork. Ever wonder what happens when a bunch of New York yogis decide to get together with the collective intention of creating more peace and happiness in the world?

Well, here you are.

Choreography and creative vision by Molly LehmanRevery Media New York City. Song by Trevor Hall.

A pregnant woman practices on a rooftop. Two commuters stretch out before their train arrives.  A ballerina-like yogi does backbends by the water. This little film is full of beauty.

The Yin to Your Bikram Fire

All photos are from Kelly Loves Whales' Flickr Photostream. She has a beautiful practice!

So my bold, beautiful yogi friend Lindsay and I expanded our yoga views today with a great Yin Yoga class at Heaven Meets Earth Studio in Evanston. Our teacher Ashley led with a lovely, calm, encouraging style and we were lucky to have a small and intimate 3-student class.

Heaven Meets Earth is home to a wide variety of classes, eye-opening workshops, and some really sweet retail offerings (clothing, props, mats & amazing candles that I managed to resist!). And Katie, the receptionist up front, was very friendly and welcoming. It made for an A+ experience at the studio.

Yin class is the perfect way to balance out the heat, madness, and high-energy dialogue of Bikram Yoga. To me, it felt like a refreshing yogic nap with gradually-intensifying hip openers. You spend a lot of time in postures (generally three to five minutes!) and there are a lot of calm, peaceful asanas.

Now my pigeon can fly, instead of just waddle around.

Pigeon was my favorite and I'm pretty sure I got deeper into the posture than usual, even though it was a bit chilly in the room (but then again, what isn't in comparison to Bikram's Torture Chamber?!).

Afterward, I enjoyed a lovely release of tension in my lower back, a general feeling of ease and well-being... and a delicious gluten-free cupcake at Rose's Bakery! Linds and I splurged. Their menu is delightful (I especially enjoyed fresh half-and-half from the farm!). Such a fun start to the weekend!

Mmmm, Bridge Pose. Thanks for making my lower back feel lose, easy, flexible, comfortable! And for strengthening those quads.

Legs up the wall is the most relaxing of them all.

I'm hoping the next Yin class will feature a few more advanced postures. Headstands, for example -- I could really use some work on my headstands (and conquering my fear of them!)

Leg warmers would be great in class! Toasty toes!

Nothing like some inversions to give you a new perspective on the weekend ahead.

Thanks again to Lindsay and the lovely staff at Heaven Meets Earth for such a wonderful afternoon. I'll definitely be back!

Focus Forward Friday: Take Your Yoga with You!

Lindsay on top of a west-coast mountain doing Triangle. She is mighty!
Focus Forward Friday: A weekly ritual for deepening your Bikram practice.

Today's focus: travel! It's time to celebrate the upcoming trips that Hubs and I have coming up: Thanksgiving in Minneapolis, first week of December in Puerto Rico (for work), and Christmastime in California. I'm so excited!

I'm also thrilled to try some postures in exotic locations: maybe on the beach, in the woods, or even by a lake. Perhaps I can fit in a few classes at new studios.

Do you take your yoga with you when you travel?

Bailey at the beach. Love that Balancing Stick!

A graceful backbend.

My CA friend Lauren does a playful headstand overlooking San Francisco.

I love enjoying nature in an urban setting. Nice Standing Bow, lady!

A Labor Day Weekend to Remember: Yoga, Boating & A Midwestern Car Auction

A panorama view of the spot where I just practiced a little yoga on my own. Beautiful, eh?

This has been a Labor Day weekend to remember! On Friday, the Hubs, Best Man and a lovely friend of mine headed out of Chicago on our great adventure to eastern Indiana. We spent Friday through Monday morning with an awesome family with three NU guys we know, some awesome parents who attended our wedding, and their daughter who I hadn't met yet. They are one of the loveliest families we know, and their place is rockin'!

They offered us sweet digs in their Honeymoon Suite room -- complete with super-comfy king size bed and our own bathroom, plus a quality room for our friend, too. Then Mrs. P cooked delicious meals all weekend, we boated in the sunshine, and rode golf carts around the place to get from their office house to their main house and their fitness center. It's been fantastic!

And the best part is, it was a weekend filled with friends, great conversation, sleeping in, playing with dogs and cats, golf cart football, swimmin in a lake, and appreciating gracious hospitality. Quite splendid, if you ask me!

One of the highlights: doing some yoga on my own in their Japanese sun room. You know, one of those incredible spaces that is perfectly serene with lush carpet and the sliding paper doors? See below:
Yeah, that's the room I'm talkin' about. Pure peace. Complete with incense burner, birds chirping in the distance, and gorgeous chandelier light overhead that looked like this...

Can you believe it? Straight out of a movie, I say. Which isn't entirely unlike the way the whole weekend felt, actually...in the sense that it was super awesome, the whole time!

We relaxed. Enjoyed the scenery. Ate homemade lasagna and gumbo (um, YES?!)...
This is where I spent my weekend. Yeah. Wondrous!

Killer view from (one of the) killer boat(s) I chilled on. Beautiful sunset included!

Oh, we also attended the largest Midwestern car auction! It was excellent. Something my dad would have been super proud of. Lamborghinis, Porches, Camaros all around. Everything in ridiculously good condition, plus a real live auctioneer selling them at full speed. And all the fair food you can imagine! Well, except for funnel cake. We did eat a pretty tasty chicken pita, though.
Then on Sunday we went for the boat ride of a lifetime! Talk about style. Italian-looking wooden speed boat with sweet red and white interior. An American flag billowing off the back. It was hot. I felt like a girl from a James Bond movie!

Plus, under my dress I was wearing a sweet Bond-style / Kill Bill style swimsuit I just bought on sale recently. Black and yellow and silver -- bikini bottoms and a zip down strapless top that totally makes me look like I'm either a superhero or out of a movie for sure. It was excellent! Plus we jumped in for a most-refreshing swim. Ahhhhhhh.

Hey if you can't make it to Bikram, you should swim or bike, I say!

I'm pretty darn excited to get back to our new place tomorrow night and get back to the Bikram first thing Tues morning, but I have to say: this was one of the best weekends I've had in a long time. So relaxing, so fun.

Thanks, P family! We love you guys and man, you sure know how to treat your guests well. :) Thanks for everything!

Blog world, what did you do for Labor Day? Who attended a crowded class? Tell your stories here!

Yoga on the Big Day: Using Bikram to Detox and Find the Calm After the Storm

Pretty sweaty, but pretty dang happy. I'm gettin' married!

From super yogi to dancing bride: man, it was the best day of my life! Beautiful photos via Joelle.

On the morning of August 7th, I woke up with the sun. Jittery and sleep deprived, with a tummy full of nervous energy, I rolled out of bed to pull on my stretchy shorts and slingback yoga shirt. I paced around the kitchen, searching the cabinets for a quick and light snack to down before leaving for class.

But even after a Luna bar and sip of coconut water and a few laps around the apartment, I still felt fidgety and restless. Checked the time. Washed my face. Threw on my flip-flops and sunglasses. Grabbed the yoga bag and headed downstairs, careful to close the door quietly so I wouldn't awaken my sleeping best friend bridesmaids.

A beautiful day was waiting outside. Stillness in the air, clarity in the breeze, sunshine. Clear skies. No worry for rain, I realized, smiling.

My thoughts brought immediate relief: we'll for sure be able to have the wedding outside! Whew. One less thing to think about there, I told myself, keeping a quick pace toward the studio. I hop-skip-walked my way down the street, taking in the path before me and scene surrounding. I wanted to do my best to remember every moment as best as I could.

And I knew I needed the yoga -- the relief of the hot room, the release, the sweat -- something (anything!) to center my mind around and distract me from the rest of the day to come.

I met up with Joelle, my now-cousin and then-photographer, a talented and lovely lady who I had a blast taking pictures with all weekend. She had generously agreed to meet up at the crack of dawn for some pre-Bikram photos in the Hot Room...and even after a practically-all-day bride-only shoot throughout the streets of Evanston the day prior. We were both pretty tired and a little sunburned, but so hyped up on all the love, creativity and time with family of the week that we couldn't wait to start snapping some shots and hang out again. Even if it was super early.

Joelle was a definite comfort along the way. I'm so nerrrrvous right now! I exclaimed, a bit surprised sounding. I wasn't even sure where all this apprehension was coming from. I figured I'd wake up calm and cool as a cucumber, but here I was shakin' and quakin' on the inside.

Of course you're nervous! Joelle gushed, laughing at my slightly antsy antics down the sidewalk. You're getting married!

I smiled, nodded. She had a point!

Plus, I had spent the whole week bustling around like a crazy person, finishing up little tasks, putting together last minute wedding favors, cleaning my room for the guests about to arrive, trying to breathe deeply enough throughout it all, and of course (unfortunately), missing yoga class most of the days.

Oh, and missing my Mr. Hubs all week too!

Yeah, they never tell you that the week leading up to your wedding is actually sort of a lonely time -- romantically-speaking, anyway. I mean I definitely saw a lot of my family and had some unforgettable times with them while we were eating out, adventuring around, playing with my nephew, drinking Jamba Juice, drinking beer at the pub across from the hotel, questing for new furniture, running things between apartments, making calls, and setting stuff up for the ceremony and reception.

I mean, it was a crazy time!

So no wonder, as I arrived at Bikram Yoga Evanston to slink down the ever-familiar stairs while smelling the ever-familiar slightly-musty but sort-of-fresh scent in the basement, I felt a wave of relief.

Ahhhh. I'm here. Finally. It was a little like getting home after a long vacation where you do a lot and get super tired and sun-drenched and lazy, but you don't do your yoga so you end up craving it like crazy by the end of a week. (That's actually exactly what happened during the Hubbymoon, ha, and I encourage you to read that post sometime here! It's a bit long, too, so be warned :)

So anyway, I get home, er, to the home studio, and Stuart (because he's awesome, even when he's tired because it's ridiculously early in the morning) lets us in early to snap some photos. I pose with the colorful mats and Super Woman poster. I set up the mat and towel in my favorite spot. Do some stretches. Some warm up backbends.

I'm creaky. The muscles are tight, the bones crackly. I roll my neck around in little circles, realizing the stress that's sitting in there. Alright, let's do this.

Joelle heads out after some misty-eyed views of the heat (Wow, they do make it crazy in here! she exclaimed as her camera lenses fogged immediately upon entering the Torture Chamber). Now it's just me and the heat. Me and the stillness. Me and my Monkey Mind tryin' to tell me why I need to be worrying about all the little things going on today.

And then the other yogis start showing up. The room gets full, calm, quiet. One of my favorite teachers -- a lady with a big smile and an even bigger heart -- leads us into the class. Pranayama is like a gift, opening up my body and lungs. Half-moon and awkward feel good -- pretty strong considering my slightly fatigued body.

In case you were wondering, it's an "S" -- self-designed by my sexy and talented husband -- for our last name, Stroud. We got 'em about a year ago after our engagement. Like a permanent way of saying "I love you," a little reminder of how big a commitment that is. And YES, you could see my tattoo during the wedding, too! Speaking of tats...I'm hoping to get a new one. Will be postin' about it soon!

After the warm up, I'm all shakes through the Standing Balancing Series. These are my favorite postures, but so challenging on the days when you just can't seem to find your balance. The Wedding Day was definitely one of those. The knee locks out, but wobbles all over the place and can't seem to stay put. The mind wanders. The foot cramps and skirts around on the towel.

You fall out, you get back in.

You keep going and before you know it, you've made it through class, oh good, oh finally, sweet sweet relief in the AC as you gulp down some VitaCoco and hit the showers.

It was, without a doubt, the best way to start my day and in many ways, the only way to start my day. A dream come true:

I practiced Bikram on my wedding day!
Pre-aisle yoga means no Bridezillas allowed!

What's funny is I don't remember a whole lot about specifics of the class -- how I did in the postures, the funny things the teacher said, the yogis around me. I do remember the feeling of relief and the eventual calm that washed over me as I continued in the 90-minute meditation.

And then as soon as I left class to walk home (and swing by the farmers market for some fresh blueberries, of course!), I felt the crazies come back -- but at least they were the good crazies.

The I'm about to see everybody I love in one place and cry with joy while I say my vows to the Love of My Life and God watches and sailboats float by and the breeze picks up the bottom of my dress and flutters it around the grassy backyard ground...well, you see what I'm saying. The really good kind of crazies.

The wedding was spectacular. Beyond dreamy. I burst into tears the second I stepped out of the Art Center building to walk down the aisle of white chairs up toward that beautiful flowery arch. My dad and I laughed with tears in our eyes all the way there. I couldn't help it: it was everything I'd imagined for so, so long...and then some.

And then it was just me and Josh, and the rest of our life standing before us.

Our living promises.

Our people. The wind in the trees.

The presence of our God surrounding the moment, holding us together in love and purity and truth.

And then -- holy moly guacamole -- we were MARRIED! We had the Big Kiss and Big Hoorah and everything! It was so much fun. Seriously dudes. Your wedding day is just. so. fun. Highly recommended. And you finally get to sit back and enjoy all of the hard work and dedication you've put toward the event.

What was great, too, is I didn't even have to know what was goin' on! People just came up to me to talk and hug and catch up, and then I'd be ushered one way to take pictures, then another way to eat some tasty foods (well, one bite of them before talking more ha), then onto the beach for more pictures, then back to the Art Center for toasts and dancing. The Hubs and I had such a blast performing our little routine a friend had taught us (he does ridiculous competitive ballroom dancing and is super talented)!

I bustled up my bustle, threw off the high heels, and boogied! Ha. Oh, and Dad and I had the father/daughter dance (he sang every time the chorus played to "I Loved Her First," this hilariously cheesy but awesome country song.) Pretty sure the whole room loved it.

We ended the night with a blowout send-off: sparklers (lit by Tiki torches) and a limo, complete with "Just Married" sign on the trunk and balloons and rose petals inside! Many thanks to the groomsmen for putting it all together :)

It was so much fun, so much joy, so much love in the span of a day. I'll never forget it.

And I'm pretty stoked to say that I started the day the right way: with some Bikram.
