Weekly Works Cited 8/22/10

Firstly, this past weekend I met up with four incredible ladies, Sal of Already Pretty, Clare of Between Laundry Days, Kristin of Bird on Your Shirt, and Christine of FutureLint.  We went for brunch and then went on a thrifting adventure and Joe (who you can learn more about here) snapped a couple of photos of us on my camera that have been making their way around the interwebs.  Their blogs are all daily reads for me, so I was thrilled to finally meet each of these awesome women in person.

Weekly Works Cited 8/8/10

An article in Bitch Magazine challenges the unquestioned privilege behind Eat, Pray, Love and the self-help genre in general.

Already Pretty pushes against the weight loss = looks great formula.  The comments are really interesting so be sure to read them too.

Style Underdog takes on the six items challenge in a pretend universe.   She has also joined the Great American Apparel Diet, as has Rad in Brooklyn of The Cohabitating Closet.  I'm excited to follow their progress and see all of their creative remixing for these projects!

In Professorial Fashion has issued a call for Wonder Woman poses.  Bad ass!

Weekly Works Cited 7/9/10

I should be landing in Venice right about now.   My husband and I are spending the next ten days in Venice, Sienna, Florence, and Rome.  But I didn't want to jet off without leaving you some interesting reads from this week, so I scheduled this post.

First the bad news -- although it's definitely not new news.  If you're an aspiring academic but haven't landed a tenure track job, the Chronicle suggests that chances are you won't.  It's doom and gloom all around.  It really makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

But life goes on even if the tenure system is sputtering:

This is a repost, but it's a great one.  Already Pretty suggests that we make an effort to wear our most beloved pieces whenever and wherever, that we wear them all the time.

Weekly Works Cited: Blog Love Edition

Over the past couple of months, I've discovered some new or some new-to-me blogs.  I thought I'd share a few of my favorites.

Quintessentially Quirky.  I interviewed Tess, the lovely lady behind this blog, a few weeks back for our Style Perceptions Series.  After that interview, I started reading her blog regularly.  If all our college students wrote as well and thought as much as Tess does, we would be in good, good shape.

Scholar Style Guide.  Three grad students in English, Liz, Katie, and Anne-Marie blog about style and semiotics and offer further proof that style and smarts need not be mutually exclusive.  If you're an academic, you'll love the way that they structure their posts.

Pretty Little Pictures. Jen has such elegant, classy style, a love of vintage, and a gorgeous hair cut.  For those of you who are into wedding planning, Jen is currently in the initial stages of a largely DIY affair, and from the sneak peeks her dress looks amazing.

S. of Academichic has recently started a new blog about biking and sustainability, called Simply Bike.  I'm looking forward to reading about her cycling adventures as well as keeping up with her fantastic style and academic career.

Since we at Fashionable Academics always enjoy reading the round ups of links that some of our favorite bloggers regularly provide, we decided to unveil a new weekly feature: a round up of posts known as Weekly Works Cited.  Some of the weeks will be thematic, some will be a mish-mash, but they will always include links to posts and articles that have interested and intrigued us over the past week.
