GAADfly - Two Month Check In

February has been a blur of research talks, travel, class prep, and grading.  The month flew by, and, as in January, I had essentially no time to even think about shopping - except for maybe at an airport.  (I did indulge in a new lipstick from Body Shop during one lengthy layover.)  The only real moment of temptation came when I visited Shabby Apple to pick out which dress we should giveaway to one of our readers.  (Don't forget to enter!)  I put one of their dresses on my birthday wishlist, but all the other items I'm hoping I'll get for my birthday are reading, writing, or travel related.

Right now not shopping for clothes, shoes, or accessories seems a lot easier than I expected it to.  Sure, there are moments when I want to shop - because I'm bored, tired, stressed, cranky.  But then I just go look at my closet and dresser crammed full of clothes, even with a laundry hamper overflowing with dirty clothes sitting in my spacious closet and a basket full of laundered, clean clothes waiting to be folded next to my bed, and I know without a doubt that I do not need to shop right now.  I know that, in terms of wardrobe, I have everything that I need right now, and most of what I want.

It doesn't hurt that I am still working my way through un(der)utilized items in my closet, such as this pair of shorts that I purchased at H&M back in November.1  Saturday marked the second time that I'd worn them and the first time they were documented for the blog.  While I still think shorts + tights is a little trendier and more youthful than I want to go for the classroom or even for office hours, I love the look for a Saturday of grading, running errands, including getting my hair cut, and taking my spouse out for a birthday dinner.
 1. Shorts - H&M, Tank and Cardi - New York & Co. (both remixed), Tights - We Love Colors (remixed), Boots - John Fluevog Bondgirls (remixed)
I do anticipate that March might be a little bit harder.  I have fewer professional spring clothes.  My birthday is March, and I usually spend the entire day shopping.  Hypothetically, I will also be quite busy, but not working at the breakneck pace I've had to maintain for the first two months of 2011.  How have you established new and different habits in the past?  What have you done to reward yourself when you're trying to get away from a system of material rewards?

Weekend Wear: Anniversary Outfit

My spouse and I celebrated one year of marriage on Saturday.  M. made us a yummy brunch, and we spent a good part of the day on the couch in our pajamas with blankets and books.  In the evening we went out for dinner and drinks, and then we stopped by a friend's housewarming party for a couple of hours.  It was the first time we'd been out on a date for a few weeks, and I had a really good time.
(Shirt - New York & Co., Shirt worn under - H&M (remixed), Skirt - New York & Co., Tights - We Love Colors (remixed), Boots - John Fluevog Bondgirls (remixed), Necklace - Wendy Brandes (remixed), Ring - Boutique in Murrano (gift and remixed)

I wore a mix of very old and new items that have never managed to make it on the blog before.  I've had this top since 2003 or 2004.  I used to wear it all the time when I was a graduate student.  Back then I loved to pair it with jeans and heels, and it reminds me of a time when I was young, svelte, and had a strangely unflappable self-confidence.  This top also holds extra special memories for me because I wore it the first time I ever lectured in a big class of almost 200 students.  The past couple of years, though, since I've been a faculty member instead of a grad student, I've been hesitant to wear sequins in the classroom (maybe sequins are the key to strangely unflappable self-confidence...).  I bought the skirt in November when I was shopping with my sister in San Antonio, and this was my first time wearing it.
Like I've said, this first stretch of GAAD is pushing me to excavate my closet and wardrobe.  As promised, bit by bit I'm revealing to you some of the microhistories of my closet and working my way through a number of un(der)worn pieces.  And I still have a ways to go with this, so I'll be sitting out 30x30 this time.

What's an item in your closet that holds special meaning for you?  What do you think the key to unflappable self-confidence is?

Weekend Wear: Second Wedding Reception

As those of you who have been reading this blog for a while may remember, I got married last January at the courthouse and had a small reception.  Since my husband is Canadian, his parents wanted to hold another smallish reception for us in Toronto.  My husband's family and some of his family's friends joined us yesterday for a luncheon reception at a lovely venue.
(Dress - White House Black Market (remixed), Cardigan - New York & Co. (remixed), Tights - Target (remixed), Shoes - r2 (remixed), Necklace - Wendy Brandes (remixed), Bracelet - Gift from my husband on our wedding day (remixed))
It was a beautiful day and brought back many happy memories of our wedding day almost a year ago.  Sadly, we don't have much time to spend with family this holiday season, and most of the rest of this break is a working vacation for both my husband and me.  We have lectures to write for the classes we are teaching next term, and I have a manuscript to get to my co-editor and publisher by January 3rd.  At least we have a little bit of time left to visit loved ones, including our beautiful new niece, pictures, and leftover cake.
Are you able to take a bit of time off over this holiday season?  Are you visiting family and friends? Do you have lectures to write for a new semester that seems already impending?  Are you using part of your break to do some archival research like SFE is?

P.S. I met up with one of my favorite bloggers this afternoon!!  I'll surprise you with who it is in a post sometime soon, but for now I'll just hint that our heads may be cropped out of the photos....

28/30 & 29/30 Monochrome and Monotone

These two outfits weren't my most inspired of the 30x30 challenge by far.  I wore #28 for an 8am department meeting and to write a final exam on Friday.  By noon I had fled the office in an attempt to beat the worst of the snowstorm home.
30x30 Items: 9. Purple Corduroys - Mango + 19. Grey Top - Zara + 24. Purple Cardi - August Silk + Sub 3. Duck Boots - Ugg
30x30 Items: 7. Dark Wash Bootcut Jeans - Express + 13. Ecru blouse - BCBG + Sub 2. Melon Cardi - New York & Co. + 29. Red Mary Janes - John Fluevog
Accessories: Earring turned necklace (self-made), Beer - Left Hand Brewing Co.

Outfit 29 was for a day of reading, football watching, and hanging out with Bailey.  She doesn't mind when my outfits are uninspired, but she gets a little freaked when I yell at the TV during Sooner football games.

I'm sorry for the brief and rather boring post.  I'm trying to get through a bunch of final papers before lunch with some colleagues today.  Do you root for any college football teams?  Do you feel any affiliation to the athletics of the university you attended as an undergraduate?  What about where you went to grad school?  Where you work?

16/30: Deathly Hallows

Last Sunday M. and I went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1.  I really enjoyed the movie, and I thought the script stayed much truer to the novel than some of the other films have.  I was a bit late to jump on the Harry Potter bandwagon, and only began reading the books in the summer of 2005.  I was on a research trip in Madrid and going to Paris for the weekend and wanted some light reading for the train. I was in the train station's bookshop looking for something to fit the bill, when I ended up settling on the first book in the series in Spanish, as the shop didn't have much of an English-language selection.  I read the first book over that weekend, and I bought the next two books when I got back to Madrid.  Since then, I have read all but the last of the books in both Spanish and English.  I haven't had a chance to buy the last book in Spanish yet, but I'm hoping that someone will give it to me for the holidays.
30x30 Items: 11. Black A-Line Skirt - Sandro + 20. Black Turtleneck + Sub. 3 Duck Boots - Ugg
Accessories: Tights - We Love Colors (remixed), Scarf - Target (remixed), Belt - from another dress (remixed)
A couple of weeks ago I was in the office chatting with a couple of my colleagues about movies.  I mentioned how I was looking forward to seeing the new Harry Potter movie, which led to a discussion about the fake book covers for Harry Potter.  I boldly proclaimed that I wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen reading them - after all my lectures on early modern witch hunts are peppered with references to the series.

Have you read the Harry Potter novels?  Seen the movies? What do you think of the latest movie?

15/30: Thankful

Last Saturday I went with a friend and colleague in another department to a film festival.  We spent the day together driving, seeing some Scandinavian films, doing some holiday and other shopping, and chatting.  I feel very thankful to have this friend in my life, as well as the other friends that I have made since moving here at the end of July.
30x30 Items:  Sub 1. Black Pants - New York & Co. + 19. Grey Top - Zara + 23. Black Ruffle Front Cardi - Willi Smith + 30. Grey Slouchy Boots - Steve Madden
Accessories: Pink Scarf - H&M (remixed)
I feel like this year I have a lot for which to be grateful: a job that I love 99% of the time, being done with graduate school, my family, my friends, health, running water, heat, cuddle time with Bailey, bike paths, running trails, coffee in my cup, and food on my table.  I am thankful for this blog and my amazing co-bloggers.  I am grateful that you readers stop by, whether you be commenters or lurkers, new readers or old.

I hope all of you American Academics have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday, and I hope our international readers also have much to be thankful for!

9/30 Sisters in San Antonio

This past weekend I flew to San Antonio to run a half-marathon.  I had originally planned to run the full marathon, and I chose this particular race for two reasons: the date gave me long enough to adequately train (although in the end my 3-3 load and attempts to still do research did not) and my younger sister lives in San Antonio.  Her 23rd birthday was just a couple of days before I flew in, so I had gone with the plan of having a belated celebration with her once I got there.  My mother also visited my sister that week, and our trips overlapped by a day, so I was able to see my mom too.  It was especially wonderful because I hadn't seen either my mom or my sister since my wedding last January, and probably won't see them again until the summer at the earliest.  My sister agreed to make a special guest appearance here on the blog, and my mom served as our photographer.
On me: 30x30 Items: 7. Dark Wash Bootcut Jeans - Express + 13. Ecru blouse - BCBG + 22. Olive Green Cardi - New York & Co. + 29. Red Mary Janes - John Fluevog
Accessories: Flower Pin - Goody (Target)
On H: Dress - Ross, Tights - Ross, Shoes - Payless
On Saturday my sister and I dropped my mom off at the airport late in the morning, then we went to pick up my race packet and  to do some birthday shopping.  While I know 30x30 includes a shopping ban, I had told Kendi going in that I would still be shopping in part because my winter wardrobe doesn't have what it takes for an upper midwestern winter and in part because I knew I'd want to shop with my sister on this trip.  We ended up with some good birthday loot for her and a couple more wintry items for me - including pants that fit and a warm cardigan, both of which I decided to sub in for unworn 30x30 items.

My trip and our visit were great!  If you want to know how I did in the half, you can read my report on my other blog.

Have those of you in academia ended up living in places close to your families?  Are you able to visit them often?

2/30

Those of you who have been reading our little corner of the intertubes for awhile might recall that I jumped onto the shorts and tights bandwagon last winter.  As I was putting my 30x30 list together, I had the sudden realization that the winter in the upper Midwest is likely to kick my ass and that I had better wear shorts and tights and/or make hay while the sun shines.
30x30 Items: 8. Shorts - ModCloth + 19. Grey Top - Zara + 24. Purple Cardi - August Silk + 26. Bondgirls - John Fluevog
Accessories: Necklace - Etsy (remixed), Tights - Target (remixed)
Saturday the sun was shining, and I wore shorts paired with tights.  I didn't make any hay, though.  Instead I spent the entire day on the couch grading papers and/or watching college football.  I'm trying to be more environmentally friendly so I had my students upload their papers, and I've been grading them on my computer using the comments function and pasting my rubric onto the end.  I'm not a complete convert to the system yet, but it definitely saved me the time it would have taken me to print out 90 papers.  Time that I then spent working on an article, watching an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and taking a rare gratuitous butt shot.
I admit that I like the shorts and tights thing - the 90s were formative years for me, after all.  However, I don't foresee myself ever wearing short in the classroom or to department meetings.  What about you?  Have you jumped on this bandwagon?  Do you consider shorts + tights classroom appropriate?  Library appropriate?

Weekend Wear: Not Quite Harem Pants

Since I needed to do some things at home (such as enroll in health benefits with my husband) and since I don't teach on Fridays, I'm working from home today.  I'm enjoying it because my desk in my home office is much nicer and more spacious than my desk in my campus office and because I'm very comfortable in these Pro-mod pants that I bought when we were in Italy.1
1. Pants - Promod (remixed), Shirt - Cable & Gauge (remixed), Belt - De Lonti (via TJ Maxx and remixed), Shoes - Kenzie Girl (via DSW and remixed)
Seriously, these pants are even more comfortable than some of my pajamas!

So far it's been a productive day.  We made our benefits decisions, I've written most of the lecture that I'm giving on Monday, and I'm about to turn to some work on a writing project for the rest of the afternoon.  I'm looking forward to a low-key weekend of marathon training, date night to break my husband's Yom Kippur fast, watching football, a coffee and study date with a good friend, and working on some writing projects.  What's on your agenda for the weekend?  I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Weekend Wear: Skinnies

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you will perhaps remember that I gained a bit of weight during the final stages of dissertating.  While it has been a slow road to get the pendulum swinging in the other directions (I guess a PhD doesn't prevent mixing metaphors, after all), I am finally starting to reestablish some healthy habits in terms of eating.  Also since I've begun training for my second marathon, my exercise routine is getting nailed pretty firmly into place.

While I'm still not back into a number of my pairs of pants (which is partly why I bought the harem pants), I have managed to wiggle my way back into a pair of my skinny jeans.1  As I told A-Dubs over at In Professorial Fashion, I don't wear skinnies for teaching until at least a few weeks into the term and usually then I'd pair them with a blazer.  Unfortunately, I've found that female faculty, and especially younger female faculty, can't take classroom respect for granted.  At any rate, I'm happy to be reunited with my skinnies for weekend wear.

 1. Jeans - Old Navy (remixed), Dress as tunic - Red Dress Shoppe, Necklace - Gift (remixed), Shoes - diba (remixed), Sunnies - Esprit (thrifted and remixed), Botched bangs - me, myself, and I
What are your thoughts on skinny jeans in the classroom?  What are your thoughts on them in general?

Weekend Wear: Boho Chic Redux

Right now I'm in Italy on my honeymoon, but I scheduled this post and a couple of others for while I'm gone.  Last weekend AUH and I met up to see Eclipse, and then we picked up M. to go out to eat Mexican food, drink wine, and eat amazing macaroons.  It was a warm day (although this was before we moved into hellish heat wave weather), but I always freeze at the movie theater so I felt the need to throw on a cardi.1
1. Dress - Anthro (via Ebay and remixed), Cardi - Target, Shoes - Franco Sarto (remixed), Necklace - Self-made (remixed), Purse - Nine West, Sunnies - Oscar de la Renta (remixed), Barette - ???

At the risk of alienating those readers who are fans of the Twilight series, I have to admit that AUH and I went to this movie because we expected to see some shirtless Taylor Lautner and to giggle at moments where the writers/directors/actors did not intend for us to.  This is what I did when I watched Twilight and what AUH and I did when we went to see New Moon together back in the fall.  I've read on the interwebs that a lot of fans of the book series have been disappointed with this movie for not following the book as well the other two movies.  I actually thought this movie was the best of the three.  In fact, I was impressed with it considering the foundation that it had to work with.

I won't go into great detail here, but I will say that the whole Edward/Bella/Jacob love triangle doesn't work for me, and all of these relationships are emotionally if not physically abusive.  Edward is a creepy stalker.  And age may just be a number, but talk about a great grandfather complex.  Jacob is little better.  He's a controlling asshole, too, who doesn't respect Bella's decisions.  The Buffy vs. Edward video pretty much sums up my feelings about the Twilight series.  And the fact that high school kids are now biting each other to express their love -- or just to announce the fact that they're going out -- is really fucking disturbing.

The only thing positive that I can say about the series is that Bella does seem to do her homework.  Have you seen Eclipse?  What did you think?  Are you a fan of the series?

Home is Where My Closet Is

I'll keep this short today because I'm starting to feel anxious about the fact that I haven't done any work for over a week (this has not happened for years).  I arrived back home from a week on the road late Friday night, and I spent the last two days trying to get organized, running, and seeing friends.  I went out for dinner with two of my girlfriends from Ecology last night to talk about how things were going with doggies and kitties and work (trees, birds, and book reviews) and recent adventures in househunting and at campground sites.  I decided to wear a new-to-me dress that I scored on Ebay a few weeks back.1

1. Dress - Hazel (via Ebay), Tank - ??? (I've had it for years, it might be Target), Sandals - Steve Madden (remixed), Bangles - Target

Usually, I'm pretty organized when I pack, but with the defense and other chaos of the week before last, I ended up just chucking some shit in a suitcase and making sure I grabbed my running shoes.  There was no plan, no cohesion, no extra pair of socks.  So I was really glad to be reunited with my closet this weekend.

I was also very happy to be reunited with Bailey, who has taken to wearing hats after her time away at boarding school.

Are you of the careful packer variety or do you end up on a roadtrip with a suitcase full of random pieces?

A Dress and a Defense

Since a number of you wonderful readers have asked to know a bit more about my defense, I'll tell you a more about it after the snap of yesterday's outfit.1 I wore this Boden crinkle linen dress to run errands, including taking that stupid Tahari dress back to Macy's and grocery shopping, and to make risotto.

1. Dress - Boden (via Ebay), Shoes - Diba (remixed), Hat - Vintage (won in Leproust Vintage's charity auction), Earrings - Gift from friend (remixed), Sunnies - Esprit (thrifted and remixed)

So onto the defense.  I'll preface these remarks by saying that technically defenses are open in my department, but that no one ever actually comes to them.  We don't give a presentation.  It's pretty much two hours of Q&A, which has its advantages and disadvantages.  While it's not that uncommon for people to fail their candidacy exams in my department, there has only been one person who failed their dissertation defense in the recent history of my program.  The knowledge that there was that one person who didn't make it through their defense put a small dose of healthy fear into me in the days leading up to mine.

To be frank, my actual defense was rather anticlimactic in a lot of ways.  I was sent out of the room at the start, so that my committee could talk about whether or not they planned to pass me and how to structure the defense (or so I assume), and, when I came back in, my committee confirmed that they wanted to spend the first hour of the defense talking about the dissertation itself and the second hour talking about transitioning into the book.  (This was an idea that had been bandied about via email before the defense and had given me some confidence going into that room.)  I received some praise, some criticism, a couple of tough questions, a question that I couldn't really answer, and some questions that I had no problem with.  Before we knew it, we had been talking for about an hour and forty minutes.  At that point my supervisor said that there were only twenty minutes left in the defense so we should talk a bit about ideas for transitioning the diss into a book manuscript.  We bounced some ideas around.  Then my chair sent me back out of the room.  I decided to use the chance to go to the washroom.  When I got out, they had opened the door, and as I walked back in, they greeted me as "Doctor" and there were hugs and handshakes all around.

My advisor told me later in an email and then again at the small dinner party that he held for me a couple of days after the defense that the outside faculty rep (who was in Neuroscience) had said that I was very poised.  I didn't necessarily feel that way, but once I started talking I hadn't really felt nervous either.  I've had a fair amount of experience presenting my research and handling criticisms and questions.  In the past six years I've defended my MA thesis, my candidacy exams, presented at numerous conferences, had job interviews, and given a job talk.  It's no less true for being a truism that when you are defending your dissertation, you are the expert on that topic; you have read far more and thought far more about it than anyone else in that room will have.

Honestly, the thing that was most difficult for me during my defense was handling praise from my committee.  I had steeled myself for tough questions and maybe even a bit of hostility, so I found myself caught a bit off-guard when my co-advisor and one of my committee members began their comments and questions by praising my project and the work that I had done.  It was particularly meaningful -- albeit disconcerting -- to me coming from one of my committee members, who is a woman and whom I very much admire as a mentor.   I didn't cry during the defense, but I did later when I told M. and my best friend, Herr Doktor, about their praise.

That's pretty much it.  The two hours flew by.  I'm glad that it's over with, of course.  But in the end, the project isn't finished.  I have a few changes to make before I deposit the dissertation.  Even that is just a draft, though.  In the next year or so, I'll be working to turn it into a book.  I am, however, going to take a couple of months away from the project after the deposit to get some other things cleared off my desk and to come back to it with a fresh eye.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to leave them in the comments or to email me.

Weekend Wear: Boho Chic

This past Saturday I took most of the day off from academic responsibilities to run some errands and to enjoy the nice weather with M. and Bailey in the great outdoors.  So I went for this simple and breezy maxi dress.1  I know that some people out there think that women who are not very slim should avoid the silhouette of a maxi dress, but I don't agree with that for one second.  I don't think there is a weight limit for boho chic any more than I do for skinny jeans.

 1. Dress - Anthropologie (via Ebay)
Cardi - Sweater Works (remixed)
Wedges - Diba (remixed)
Sunglasses - Vintage (via Leproust Vintage)
Necklace - Gift
Purse - Express (Gift and remixed)

I was really excited to wear this necklace that a dear friend made for me and these fun vintage sunnies that came as part of the auction package that I won from Leproust Vintage's Nashville Flood Relief Auction.  If you're a fan of vintage, she has some really fantastic things in her shop.

I'm hoping the weather will be nice enough again in a few days to wear the rest of my auction loot, which included a vintage dress and straw hat.  I'm also looking forward to some nicer weather over the next few weeks to show off my tattoos more since I'm not currently teaching.  Speaking of tattoos, if you have one, you should consider submitting it for our annotated bibliography!  Submissions are due by next Monday, May 24th.  You can get the details here.

Well, it's on to drinking a coffee the size of my head and writing, writing, writing for me here.  What's on your agenda for the day?  Academics and students are you done with classes and finals yet?

Over the Weekend

First of all, I want to thank you all so much for your comments yesterday about our interview!  M.'s status was approved and he is now a conditional resident.  We'll have to submit more paperwork in a couple of years, but I'm glad to have the better part of an expensive and time-consuming process out of the way.  I love my husband, but I've been pretty tempted to use using this for leverage when it comes to household chores and deciding who goes to pick up our takeout and dry cleaning.

We went out on Saturday night to a party at Ann Underfunded Humanity's place, and it was a great time.  I had intended to take some photos of the party, since a few stylish academics were about the place, but once I had a glass of wine in one hand and a plate of food in the other, that ship had sailed.  In fact, I only remembered to get photos of my own outfit after we got home that night.1  So these were taken with the nighttime profile setting on my point-and-shoot.

 1. Yellow Dress - Signature by Robbie Bee (remixed)
Black Dress - Y Boutique (remixed)
Shoes - Ann Klein (remixed from my wedding)
Belt - From another dress (remixed)
Purse - Harrods (gift and remixed)

I also feel compelled to come clean about something goal-related.  Over the weekend I was supposed to run a half-marathon, but I decided not to the night before the race.  I've been having a really hard time getting in my long training runs and even some of my shorter runs in as I deal with this last round of revisions before my defense and the chaos of finishing up the semester at the small liberal arts college where I've been a visiting faculty member this year.  I decided to remove running from the list of stressors for the time being.  I'll still run when I feel like it and to relieve stress, but I won't feel anxious or guilty because I only ran 2 miles instead of 12.  Right now I just don't need anything else causing me anxiety or guilt even if it means not meeting my goal of running three half-marathons this year.

What tactics do you have for dealing with stress? How are you doing with your goals or New Year's resolutions?

Weekend Wear: Hello Kitty Tee

On Sunday I went to brunch, did some lecture writing, went to the library to pick up eight or nine books that I needed for dissertation revisions and/or lecture writing, met up with a friend, and finally came home to do a little more writing.  As an academic, my weekends usually involve just as much work as my weekdays.  So sometimes I need a little extra motivation or self-deprecating humor to keep my fingers on the keyboard.  Sunday I got a little of both, and they came in the form of the graphic t-shirt that my mom gave me a few months ago.1

 1. Hello Kitty "I Love Nerds" Tee - Imaginary People (gift)
Jeans - Express (remixed)
Cardi - Old Navy (thrifted)
Shoes - Kenzie Girl (remixed)
Earrings - Target (remixed)

In a previous post, I wrote about the fact that although I love Hello Kitty, I tend to relegate my more cutesy paraphernalia to the weekend wear category.  I have decided, though, that this little tee might just see the light of day occasionally during the "work week" in the future.  Would I wear it to campus to teach in or to listen to a visiting scholar give a talk?  Probably not -- unless I could find a way to make this tee into a pun about the topic or theme.  However, I might pair it with a blazer or a cardi for a day at the library.  And, since I just ordered several more books, I have no doubt a library day will be coming up soon....

What are your thoughts on graphic tees in the classroom or in your place of work?  How do you like to style them?

Bonus question: who is your favorite self-professed nerd?  Mine is my husband, but I have to say that I also really adore Tania of What Would a Nerd Wear!

She Curses Like a Sailor

Some people have remarked that I curse like a sailor.  Yesterday I thought it was about fucking time that I look the part.  I spent most of the day working on revisions for one of my dissertation chapters.  This chapter is focused on two early modern port cities so I thought it was an appropriate (if rather anachronistic) outfit for the task at hand.  I also couldn't resist mixing metaphors a little bit with this outfit.  It's part sailor uniform and part piratical thanks to my Fluevog Mallory boots.1

1. Dress - Shabby Apple (remixed)
Shirt - ??? (remixed)
Tights - Steve Madden (remixed)
Boots - John Fluevog (remixed)
Swear Rings - Wendy Brandes (remixed)
Steampunk Anchor Necklace - Etsy

I felt strangely motivated to keep working every time that I looked down at my hands on the keyboard and saw my Wendy Brandes Swear Rings.  Perhaps it's because I don't have a whole lot of time left to finish this round of revisions, and the rings reminded me of how much I'll be cursing in a couple of weeks if I don't keep a fire lit under my ass.

Thanks to Etsy sellers and to Wendy Brandes, I have so many amazing and unique pieces of jewelry.  While it's hard to pick a favorite these rings and my Paris hat locket necklace are probably tied for my affections right after my wedding band and engagement ring, which are the only two pieces of jewelry that I wear every day. What is your favorite piece of jewelry?  What piece of your jewelry gets the most wear?

Weekend Wear: Peacock Tights

One day a weekend or two ago, I met up with AUH to have ice cream and chat.  We had planned to have ice cream because the week had been sunny and warm, but the day before our meet-up the temperature dropped significantly and it snowed overnight.  To be frank, this kind of fickle weather during the Midwestern spring no longer surprises me nor does it prevent me from eating ice cream.  In a way I didn't mind the colder temperatures too much because it gave me a chance to get at least one more wear out of my peacock tights before it gets too hot for tights to be in the regular rotation.1

 1. Dress - Target (remixed)

Even though I have worn bright colored tights and even my floral patterned tights to campus and to teach in, I've never quite felt right about wearing these to give a lecture or to have a committee meeting.  Do I think they're perfect for eating ice cream, shopping for wine, and looking at weird art?  Yes.  Do I think they're just right a day on campus?  No.  These tights suggest preening to me in a way that I'm just not comfortable with for classroom wear.

Would you wear these tights in the classroom or would you relegate them mostly to weekend wear, as I have done?

And is it just me or does the food in this painting look more malevolent than appetizing?  The drooping and hungry flower also struck fear into my heart!

Intelligent, classy, well-educated women who say F@#! a lot

A few days ago, I noticed a Facebook group called "intelligent, classy, well-educated women who say F*ck a lot" and thought to myself: that is the group for me!  For those who know me in real life this would come as no surprise.  Several years ago, I accidentally let the word fuck slip in a graduate seminar, and ever since I've had a bit of a reputation for swearing.
Considering the frequency with which I use the word, it may come as no surprise that I have been coveting the Wendy Brandes swear rings for a as long as I have known of their existence.  Indeed I have been plotting to make them mine.   Well, after meeting a couple of goals (one half-marathon down, dissertation submitted to my committee, lots of poetry, shopping ban finished with only one slip-up) that I've been working towards for a while, I decided that it was time to stop fucking coveting and buy the damn things.

I ordered them on Friday (after some difficulty remembering my password, which led to an ironically appropriate bit of swearing and having to set up a new account), and Wendy shipped them to me right away.  They arrived at my front door on Saturday morning, so I wore them around the house with pjs for awhile.  Then, that afternoon, I took them on their first outing to have coffee with a very stylish friend of mine.  For the first public wearing, I wanted the rings to really contrast with the rest of my outfit, so I chose a more classic pattern (houndstooth) and springy pastels (pink and lilac).1 I rather liked the results.

So, there I was at a coffee shop, just an intelligent, classy, well-educated woman who says f@#! a lot.  Nothing had changed except that I could let my hands do the talking for me.

I admit that I sometimes curse in the classroom.  I find that it shocks students back into paying attention, when used judiciously.  These days I tend to mostly use it in the classroom by finding a choice quote here and there that enable me to swear but attribute it to someone else.  Even so, I probably won't wear these to campus unless I am lecturing about cursing, swearing, piracy, or sailors....  It might be time to make a few changes to my syllabi....

What about you?  Are you an intelligent, classy, well-educated person who says f@#! a lot?  Do you tend to censor your language in the classroom, at work, in front of small children?
