The Gentleman's Guide to Skin Care

The Gentleman's Guide to Skin Care

Author: Tiffany Windhurst

Proper skin care and nourishment is just as important for a man as it is for a woman. In fact, in many ways, it's more important.

Not only are men more likely to perspire, they tend to pick up more oil, dirt and other contaminants. The daily ritual of shaving can dry out the skin, as it strips away natural moisture and can lead to chafing and roughness. Even men with facial hair can be prone to clogged pores and hair follicles, which can lead to breakouts, rough skin, irritations and sometimes possible infections.

Luckily, following a skin care regime is really quite simple. The three basic steps are cleansing, moisturizing and protecting.

Cleansing: Wash your face twice a day with a mild, soap free cleanser. If you are prone to oily or dry skin, products that are made for these problems are obviously the best choice. When you wash, start by rinsing the face with hot water. Rub the cleanser on in circular motions to help penetrate the pores and gently massage and exfoliate. This will prevent the build up of dirt in the pores. Once you're done cleansing, splash your face with cold water at least ten times. This will close the open pores, making it difficult for dirt to find its way in.

Moisturizing: There are moisturizers specifically designed for use by men. You should always apply a light moisturizer after washing to help replenish and nourish the skin. Facial skin can be prone to bouts of dryness, especially when exposed to weather, sports, heavy persperation and so on. There is nothing rugged or handsome about dry skin.

Protect: Sunburn causes discoloured areas of skin, can lead to skin cancer and other diseases, as well as causing skin to flake and peel. A good sunblock should be applied even for short excursions in the sun. Men often forget to reapply after heavy activity, so keep a bottle handy to reapply after cutting the grass, swimming or playing sports. Again, perspiration can wash away the sunblock, so always have some on hand to protect your skin.

Neglecting your skin is not a guy thing, it's a silly thing. Your face will stay with you throughout your life, so you should be taking steps to keep it looking its best at all times.

How to Look Slimmer

How to Look Slimmer

Author: Tiff Windhurst

Does this make me look fat? While your spouse may roll their eyes when you ask that question, it's actually a valid query.

Certain styles and colour will draw attention to pudgy areas, while others will give our bodies more flow, allowing us to look slimmer. If you want to look a little lighter than you are, it's a matter of highlighting the good areas and detracting from the thicker areas.

Black is Slimming: This old wive's tale is completely true. And it's not exclusive to just black. Dark, solid colours, such as black, navy blue or dark brown have a slimming effect and make you appear thinner. You should avoid heavy patterns, especially horizontal stripes. The stripes actually add width to your body and make you appear larger.

The Right Shoes: Your shoes are an important part of your wardrobe. They complement the legs, and the style is key to completing the look you desire. Wearing shoes that are the same colour as what's dressing your legs, be it pants or pantyhose, will elongate your legs and make them appear slimmer. Short ended round or square toed shoes can make you look stubby, whereas long pointed toes will continue the thinning look.

Skinny Jewels: Jewelry can attract attention and broaden a slim face or narrow down a large face. Long dangling jewels are the best accessory choice to reduce the look of broadness. Earrings that hang straight and low are preferable to large chunky styles or oversized circles. The same holds true for necklines, as long necklaces will give you length where as bulky beads will make you look wider.

Finally, the most important part of maintaining a slimmer appearance is standing correctly. Stand straight and tall, with correct posture. Slouching will make you look bulkier, so always stand and walk straight, with your head up, arms at your sides (not crossed) and eyes forward.
