The downside of being in your 40's is that you maybe carry a few extra pounds, you have more grey hair than you had before, or less hair, and the fine lines of your 30's are now clearly wrinkles. On the positive side, yes there is hope, you will probably be more confident and secure in yourself, be well established in your career and be comfortable with your own sense of style, having learnt from the fashion mistakes that you probably made in your teens or your twenties.

However being in your 40's doesn't necessarily mean that you can rest on your laurels when it comes to fashion, the main principle is to accept your age and don't try to dress the way of a teenager or a man in his early twenties, you will go a long way to achieving this by avoiding the latest trends, which are usually designed for men of a younger age, be assured that your age will give you away if you try to keep up with the younger generation. Don't even be tempted if fashionable items you wore when you were younger come back into fashion, leave your past where it is and embrace your age.

In your 40's the best style tip is to keep it simple, loud patterns and prints should be left to the younger men, while you should opt for a smart, sophisticated, well fitted look. Make sure your clothes fit you well, this is particularly important as we age and our body shapes change slightly, oversized or ill fitting clothes can look very bad. Always opt for well cut. clean lines and crisp shirts, which give a mature and stylish appearance.

Trying to dress like the younger generation sends out the message of a midlife crisis, embrace your age and dress accordingly.

Keep on top of your physical appearance and accept the signs of aging rather than deny them, don't try and disguise thinning or greying hair, and make sure you are well shaven, facial hair at this age can make you look much older. A dilemma for many men, aside from choosing which clothes to wear, are which colours go together and compliment each other and more importantly, which colour combinations to avoid.

Unless you want to spend the rest of your life wearing monochromes, you will need to consider at some point which colour combinations are good together. Once you have established a few good colour matches, you can break out of the traditional dull and become a little more adventurous towards colour, which can add a whole new dimension to your wardrobe.

When considering your colour options, be aware that there are different types of colour variation, for a better idea you would need a colour wheel, which will give you a great guide to combining your colour scheme.

Similar colours, which are often slight variations or different shades of the same colour, you will find these next to each other on the colour wheel and they will compliment each other very well, for example blue and navy or navy and purple. Similar colours are a great place to start, and are always pretty safe combinations and quite easy, for example a navy blazer with a light blue shirt.

Complementary colours are found opposite each other on a colour wheel, for example red and green or orange and blue, and they will look balanced when placed next to each other or worn together, often making each colour look brighter.

Contrasting colours are by definition three colours apart in the wheel and are often associated with bold choices, such as blue and orange, yellow and purple. The easiest contrasting colours are black and white which are easily worn together.

While you should be able to quickly grasp the combination of similar colours, complimentary and contrasting may be slightly more difficult. If you've looked at your wheel and you are still unsure, there are some simple combinations to start you off

Green and khaki is a great and classic combination and is best accomplished with dark greens, The combination is perfect for both autumn and spring, for example a solid green colour top, anything from a jumper, polo shit or t shirt with khaki chinos would look perfect.

Becoming slightly more adventurous, red and green are great complimentary colours, don't be afraid to vary the shades of colour, for example a red or even pink top will look good with a pair of dark green trousers or shorts.

Red and blue are a good combination, essentially one colour should be dominant worn in a darker shade, otherwise the colours will compete with each other.

When choosing contrasting colours such as red and yellow, they should be worn with caution, its great to be stylish and make a good impression, but you don't wan t to be remembered for all the wrong reasons. As a general rule only wear one as the dominant colour while the other should contribute only as a small portion of your attire, such as a tie or other accessory.

When warm weather approaches men's relaxing attire starts to make its way to the front of the closet. During the warmer weather, men demand comfort from their clothes, and why not? You work hard, and now you want to play hard. Yet, you want to look good too.

While baggy clothes are in style for some young men, many body types are not flattered with this type of clothing. Loose, not baggy is the best way to go. There is a world of difference between loose and big. Wearing clothes that are obviously two or three sizes too big does not put practical men in a good light.

A visit to any good department store will offer a cornucopia of relaxing clothes. Jeans immediately come to mind. You can run errands, walk in town, or just relax in them. However, loose jeans are the way to stay comfortable. Yet, while relaxing it is indeed important, the discriminating man needs a certain look. That is, the clothes must match his persona.

When one thinks of relaxing on a warm day, most men can hardly wait to throw on their favorite tee shirt. There is no shortage of loose tee shirts in stores. Of course, it does not hurt if you are lean and keep yourself fit. If this describes you a relaxed fit a tee shirt will indeed flatter your physique.

Yet, there are times when a collar is needed. Polo shirts are the next step up from tee shirts. Most polo's fall free over a man's body, and are comfortable. In addition, a polo shirt goes great with shorts when a collar is needed. You look good, yet you are relaxed.

On the whole, baggy does not suit the physique of most mature men. However, loose fitting clothes in warm weather does. Jeans that are not tight look great with a tee or polo shirt. Pocket Squares are now very popular, traditionally associated with businessmen, they add a touch of class to any jacket or blazer and they can be worn casually as well. There are some great silk pocket scarves available, but cotton may be more practical and versatile. Don't be afraid to use colour, rather than white, be adventurous.

In general, try to achieve some coordination with your pocket square and your shirt or tie. If patterned, it can be an exact match, but it doesn't have to be. As long as their maybe a background colour, but always aim for some colour coordination.

Spend some time on folding your pocket square correctly and you will be able to brighten up any outfit, while adding a touch of class.
