CAVALLI HIPPIE CHIC

I love this hippielook. The hair, the dress, the bag and makeup! Robert Cavalli spring/summer 2011 (hair; Redken by Guido... foto: Matt Lever)

Two Wheeler Thursday

So far this semester I've tended to dress more on the side of business casual with just hints of my personal style thrown in, but as I am now in the thick of the term (which feels a bit odd to me since AUH, thechemist-coture, HD, and SFE only recently began their terms) and since today I was spending a fair amount of the time in my two classes reviewing for the upcoming midterm exam, I am beginning to reverse the paradigm.  I'm still aiming to dress professionally, but I'm now to the point in the term where I feel like I can relax some of my professartorial rules.
(Dress - Anthropologie (remixed), Cardigan - August Silk (thrifted and remixed), Belt - from another skirt (remixed), Tights - We Love Colors, Boots - John Fluevog (remixed), Little Woolf Necklace - Wendy Brandes)
I have been holding off on wearing this dress because it's cotton, the print is very whimsical, and the last button falls in such a way that I feel like the dress exposes more leg than I personally would care to in the classroom.  At this point in the term I have fewer reservations about the first two of these issues and the gorgeous fall tights-wearing weather provides an easy solution for the third.

Do you have any professartorial rules that you relax as the term progresses?  For those of you, dear readers, who aren't academics do you have a substantially different approach to dressing for casual Fridays than for Monday-Thursday?  Do tell!

Forthcoming: CSN Stores Product Review

We at Fashionable Academics are happy to be teaming up with CSN stores for a product review soon.  CSN is an online retailer with over 200 stores, selling everything from dining room chairs to Diane Von Furstenberg.  The only real problems with doing a product review for CSN stores was deciding which one of us would get to do it and what product to review from their enormous selection.

Fisher Price Recall

Fisher Price has declared a recall of 10 million toys due to choking hazards and the risk of children falling onto certain parts that stick out from the toys.

The company's web site is plagued and having difficulty loading, but here Real Woman Jeans has the Recall statement for its reader:

Dear Fisher-Price Parents & Grandparents,

You may have questions about recent safety announcements for Fisher-Price toys, and I want to personally acknowledge your concerns. Many of us here at Fisher-Price are parents, too — myself included — and we share your belief that nothing is more important than the well-being of our children.

I can reassure you that our business operates in a highly regulated environment, which means that toys are overwhelmingly safe. I'd also like you to know that beyond industry regulations, Fisher-Price takes additional steps to constantly gather and review feedback about how our products are doing in real homes. We analyze this information to see if patterns are developing that could indicate a product performance or other type of issue.

Through this monitoring, we have identified a few issues we want you to know about. In collaboration with the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Health Canada and other regulators, we initiated the recall process for certain products. And we're reaching out to parents to help you determine whether you have a recalled product and how to get a replacement part or repair kit. We've prepared detailed information for you at this website — www.service.mattel.com/us/recall.asp — and you'll also find contact information if you need to speak with someone on our Consumer Relations team.

For a list of products affected by this recall, see below.

We value your feedback and take very seriously all concerns reported during a product's life span, and we go to work to fully understand and evaluate each situation. We will continue to do this.

Product recalls are a difficult part of business, and I understand they're particularly concerning when they involve products for children. But we're going to continue to work extremely hard to bring your family products that are safe and engaging and innovative — just as you expect from Fisher-Price.”

Sincerely,

Kevin Curran, Fisher-Price General Manager

105 Yoga Opening in Oak Park, Chicago

Hey friends. So I've got some exciting news to announce for local yogis in the Chicago area. Want to try Bikram? Are you a regular and want to try a new studio?

105 Yoga is opening soon in Oak Park, Chicago!

One of my favorite teachers from Bikram Yoga Evanston has branched out and is taking the leap to start her own space. I'm so proud of her!

Nancy is a compassionate, smart, and superbly motivating teacher who really knows her stuff and sticks to the foundations of Bikram's teachings. She delivers a stellar and dynamic dialogue, and is one of those naturals who can pick up on everyone's name even if it's your first class. My favorite is when she reminds us to quiet the Monkey Mind, that ever-present nagging voice in the back of our head that makes us crazy all the time.

In Nancy's classes, you find stillness and peace and you end up proud of yourself for the work you've done in the heat. As she once reminded us in class, "You're worth more than a hundred bucks!"

I love 105 Yoga's look & feel, and the yoga quotes that Nancy shares on the site. Here's one:

"Faithfulness in the performance of small duties gives us strength to adhere to difficult determinations that life will someday force us to make."
-Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 - 1952)

This is so true! Only when we stick it out, when we suffer through the pain, when we let go -- only then can we truly be healed and become stronger in ourselves.

Another one she shared:

"I will be calmly active, actively calm. I am a prince of peace, sitting on the throne of poise, directing the kingdom of my activity."
-Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 - 1952)

This is beautiful. Can you picture yourself a prince of peace next time you're in class doing one of the harder postures? How about a peaceful Triangle pose? Can you relax even in the struggle?

Try it. Challenge yourself. You may just be surprised by what you find.

Keep up with 105 Yoga's site for their progress, class schedule, and pricing. If you need more info on why it'd be great to try the yoga, go here.

And of course feel free to contact Nancy directly.

Oh, and enjoy all of the photos on the site -- they feature yogis at Bikram Yoga Evanston! (No, I'm not in there. But Nancy is, along with some of my favorite people ever!) Strong postures, peaceful people. That's the yoga.

Namaste, Nancy. Congrats and best wishes on your beautiful studio!

Autumn Hues and the Mystery of the Wang Stork

Lately all I have been wanting to wear are neutral colors and autumnal shades, particularly olive and gold.  So when the weather played nice (if a bit windy) today, I donned my favorite fall-ish A-line skirt, an ecru colored blouse, and my olive cardi with gold buttons and hopped on my bike for a ride into campus for office hours and lecturing.
(Skirt - Anthropologie (thrifted and remixed), Blouse - BCBG (remixed), Tank - New York & Co. (remixed), Cardi - New York & Co. (remixed), Shoes - John Fluevog, Necklace - Etsy (remixed), Ring - Boutique in Salamanca (remixed), Bag - Nine West (remixed), Sunnies - Vera Wang (the Wang Stork)
So these Vera Wang Sunglasses appeared hanging on my mailbox one morning a week or so ago.  I have no clue as to their origin.  Are they a bribe from my student who is one of my neighbors?  Are they a pair of shades that belong to a friend who dropped them?  Are they a mysterious gift from a secret postal admirer?  Did I fill out some survey for which I was rewarded a pair of Vera Wang sunglasses and then forget about it?  Were they dropped by one of my neighbor's visitors only to be mistaken for mine by another neighbor?  I've no friggin' clue.  But when I mentioned this mystery on Facebook, a friend commented that you don't question the Wang Stork.  So thank you, Wang Stork, whomever you work for....
