Shirt Designs for Women

The world of fashion has come a long way forward from early days when innovation was frowned upon. Fashion has been around for a long time with clothes and shirt design a possibly frivolous but nonetheless integral part of history.

From the Hellenic Greek style and Roman togas to Victorian, Elizabethan and Edwardian era styles, fashion has long been a part of our lives. Dress and shirt design would at first glance seem to have long evolved from togas to tank tops.

There is a vast diversity of shirt designs today with plain simple shirts available in a diverse range of collars, cuffs and lower hem as well as plackets and yoke styles. Various shirt designs based on the type of cloth used are now word of mouth such as the Oxford or Royal Oxford, Twill and Chambray.

Some Things are Sheer

While I'm not on an all-out ban at the moment, I'm trying to be especially aware that I have to move in a few weeks (eep!) and that I'm not teaching summer school this summer, so I won't have a paycheck in July or August (double eep!).  During my friend's visit, we did a lot of shopping.  Most of it was for her, but I did tell myself that I could get a few tops for summer to replace the ones that are tattered, worn, or otherwise disgusting in my wardrobe.

I found this BCBG top on sale at Filene's Basement, and in spite of the fact that it is sheer and thus outside of my normal style boundaries, I decided that since I'm not teaching and won't be on campus that much this summer that I could justify buying it.1  It's not so sheer that I'm worried about wearing it in public, but I have my own set of professartorial rules and I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing this blouse (at least without another one under it) in the classroom.  I wore it the other day to take the Dissertating Yogini to the airport and to do some reading at home.

 1. Blouse - BCBG (via Filene's Basement)
Pants - NY&Co. (remixed)
Shoes - r2 (DSW and remixed)
Headband - Etsy
You can't really tell how sheer the bottom part of this shirt is in these photos, but it is pretty transparent.  What are your thoughts on sheer clothing?  Are sheer tops like these classroom and office appropriate in your book or are they best relegated to nights out and days spent working from home or in a coffee shop?

Candidacy Couture

Yesterday I became A Slightly Better Funded Humanity after passing my candidacy exams!
I wore a blue top and this skirt to my M.A. exams two years ago and thought I should wear the same for luck, though had to swap out the old H&M top for the Target shirt pictured above.

I'm so excited (and yet frazzled!) to be done that I've gone a little blurry in the photo above. While preparation for exams went from being fun to nerve-wracking and back to fun, the oral exam experience itself was oddly enjoyable and I'm looking forward to dissertating. I honestly still can't believe at this point that I don't have to turn around and take another exam in a week, though! What lucky outfits do you wear?

Top: Target
Skirt: H&M
Necklace: St. Christopher from St. Patrick's (remixed)

Fashion and Vinyasa Flow

While I don't have any fashionable yoga outfits (yet), I wore something with flow to LHdM's last Friday to get myself into an om-frame of mind before settling in for 6 hours of writing. I wanted to wear something casual that still had a bit of a neckline and cool "this is not just a t-shirt" features like the flower on one side and draping sleeves.

Unfortunately, the sandals that I was wearing broke off on my way to LHdM's, so I'm looking even more casual than I had intended....and wishing that LHdM also had size 10 feet....
And this is my "I can't believe I'm doing tree pose on a tree stump in jeans after writing all day and having wine" face. It's very detailed.
Jeans: Target
Shirt: H&M (thrifted)
Do you usually wear other things with your already semi-quirky shirts? How do you usually dress jeans up?

Vanessa Hudgens in Nudie & Zac Efron in APC again By RWJ

Vanessa Hudgens and her boyfriend Zac Efron went to see the movie Avatar for the 2nd time. Vanessa wore her Nudie jeans again and Zac wore his raw APC jeans again. Vanessa’s jeans do look a lot like J Brand but hers have silver rivets and the coin pocket is different and I included zoomed in photos so you can see the beginning of the Nudie stitching on the back pockets. I think it’s really sweet they like the same brand jeans.

Citizens of Humanity adding to their Brand

citizens-of-humanity
The brains behind Citizens of Humanity, Jerome Dahan and his partner, are expanding the executive board behind the brand. The company added Amy Williams on November 30th. She will be working with the duo on nearly every aspect in order to grow both Citizens of Humanity and Gold Sign Brands.
Williams has an extensive retail background, getting her start at Macy’s and eventually working for the Gap and finally running the retail section of Lucky Jeans. She also runs a children apparel company with her husband.
Amy Williams says that her first priority with the brand will be  to ensure that “We’re telling the clearest merchandising story in a way the customer can understand.”
Her vision doesn’t stop there, as one other item high on the agenda is advancing the online aspect of the brands. Both expanding the website for wholesale aspects as well as adding to the online stores.  Surely great things are in store for both of the brands now that Williams in on board, as she stated that, “I think [GoldSign] has tremendous potential.”
I am sure 2010 will bring exciting things for both Citizens of Humanity and GoldSign!
