Pakistan Fashion Week 2011 // P 11
Mumbai and New Delhi have long been known as the premier destinations for finding the best in sub-continental fashion. But there’s now a new city staking a claim to that title: Lahore.
The third annual Pakistan Fashion Design Council’s Sunsilk Fashion Week, which concluded last Friday, showcased strong collections from 35 of the country’s most promising designers. The collections ranged from Mughal inspired traditional wear to Western influenced skirts and dresses. Highlights included a collection inspired by the regional costumes of the women of Sindh from Nickie & Nina, floor length maxis from Sara Sublime and a contemporary ready-to-wear collection by Karma, one of the most popular fashion brands in the country.
The show was temporarily cancelled for Pakistan’s semi-final World Cup cricket match against India, a testament to how important the sport is to both countries. Although, there weren’t any obvious references to a rivalry with India on the fashion front, Pakistani fashion officials made it known that almost all of the models in their shows were from Pakistan, following claims of discrimination by Indian models over the preference shown for European models over Indian girls in India’s fashion shows. But being a model in a conservative country like Pakistan is no easy task. Many who choose to pursue the profession face rejection and ill-treatment from their families. Check out our Facebook page to watch Hilary Alexander’s interview with three Pakistani models who explain how they made it to the top of the industry despite the odds.
