8 Vintage Style Pieces with a Modern Flair

8 Vintage Style Pieces with a Modern Flair

Author: Aimee Johnson

The vintage look is a big trend in fashion, but there's also a more contemporary take on it. This uses fabrics that are easy to care for and are fairly comfortable. Mixing these two styles together ensures that you get pieces that you can mix into your existing wardrobe. Some of these looks are available at stores like Anne Klein and Ann Taylor LOFT. Here are eight vintage styles that have a modern flair:

1. Modified Trench Coats

Trench coats are a wardrobe classic, but you can also get versions that have a vintage flair. Look for ruffle details around the collar or on the front. Oversized collars are also a staple of this design style. Faux fur collars are another option. Just remove the collar to take the same jacket from day to night.

2. Modern Pencil Skirts

Pencil skirts are a trend from eras gone by that are coming back. Look for a high waist if you really want a vintage style, although you'll probably need to tuck in your blouse to show it off. You can also focus on the contemporary element with dramatic black piping or color blocking. This can be appropriate for evening use if you get a sequin version. Even just choosing a silver tone over a traditional gray pencil skirt will give you that contemporary edge.

3. Trousers

Vintage trouser styles should focus more on a male suiting look. You can accomplish this with a wider leg. Skip any version of skinny jeans unless you have a true vintage style top and you want to mix and match the two styles. You can also look for ribbon belts or sashes for a slightly more feminine look.

4. Blouses

The fashion world has seen a return to dressier blouses both for work and casual wear. You'll want to stick with silk or rayon fabrics for a chic look. These can have puffed sleeves or a polka dot fabric for that vintage air. You can still keep the style modern looking with an oversized black leather belt.

5. Vintage Sweaters

Vintage looks include a lot of little sweaters. This would traditionally entail a bolero jacket. A more modern approach would be a shorter cropped sweater over a long sleeve t-shirt for a unique take on casual wear. If you want a more modern style of cardigan, find one with a lace front or just a one button closure.

6. High Necklines

Illusion necklines have sheer material up to the neck with a more opaque fabric around the bodice. Instead of just on dresses, this is also a popular design on shirts now as well. Another popular neckline in both eras is the boat neck style which is going to be one of the higher versions you can come across.

7. Sheath Dresses

Sheath dresses can work for day or night. They should be modern with leather details or oversized button details.

8. Vintage Party Dresses

Larger skirts are also a popular hallmark of both of these eras. You can even find them in taffeta. Be aware that this will be slightly more subdued with a smaller silhouette in the modern design style.
